    3. Clive You transcribe it as one entry Lowthorpe Harry McCarthy Murphy Epsom The spouses surname is McCarthy Murphy with NO requirement to add a #COMMENT. Even if you were to add an explanation it would be #THEORY rather than a #COMMENT (ref: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6af ) Rather "posh" people sometimes have double barreled surnames without an hyphen, apparently Prime Minister David Lloyd George, the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and the actress Helena Bonham Carter are examples. Allan Raymond ----- Original Message ----- From: ESSERY, Clive G To: FREEBMD-SYNDICATES@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, February 19, 2010 1:31 PM Subject: Transcription of spouse with two names but no OR One of my transcribers recently asked me about a line on Page 37 of the range K-Z of the 1933 March Quarter marriages. The spouse name has two names but no hyphen or "OR" between the two names. I have suggested that they enter it as a single record (ie not two copies as we would do with an OR in the name) with the comment as follows: Lowthorpe Harry McCarthy Murphy Epsom #COMMENT,This line appears to have an OR missing between McCarthy and Murphy - if so it should be described as two entries but with the way it is typed we have transcribed it as a single entry. Would anyone like to comment on whether this is the correct thing to do under these circumstances or not? Many thanks, Clive Essery

    3. Hi Debz If you can see a discernable character between the lines (usually it will be a TAB character) then you can split it up with WORD or WORDPAD. Open the file in one of those programmes. Select the Edit/Replace function (usually Ctrl-H). In the Find box enter "^t" without the double quotes if the separator is a tab, in the Replace box enter "^p" without the double quotes and press the "Replace All" button. For those wishing to know more ^t is the tab character and ^p is the paragraph character. If there is no obvious separator then it may be more difficult (for example if there is a comma between each line). In the latter case send a copy of the file to clive.essery@nats.co.uk and I will try to write a macro to separate the file up for you - no guarantees that I will succeed though. 3. The most likely reason is that newline characters got changed to UNIX convention in transmission. To test this try opening the file in WordPad (Programs/Accessories/WordPad) which is more tolerant of different End Of Line conventions than Notepad. How did the transcriber send the file to you? Try using a different method or, in extremis, try zipping the file (if the transcriber can do that). I have discovered that one of my transcribers has lost 40 lines from a file, in a change made on 7th November, I assume in response to a correction request that went wrong. I found out why we had lost 40 from the count of records in a long-completed quarter since last update by doing Upload Reports on the quarter in question both on the current and previous databases, then with an Excel formula calculating the change in numbers of records in the same files in the two versions. Using Show File I can only find the latest (rather shortened) version. If someone with better access can recover the old version I will happily advise the submitter ID and filename in question. The quarter is 1853M4.
