    3. Hi Lisa, Obviously transcribing just Sheffield entries is not possible. Using excel or a text editor does slow down the transcribing process as none of the shortcuts within WinBMD are available, but if programs cannot be installed on a work PC, then there is obviously no other choice. FreeBMD cannot accept an excel file, but it is possible to convert the file to .txt, add the appropriate headers and then upload it. The two Peter's will undertake this conversion and uploading but they normally only do this for people who are not registered as transcribers. If you or the transciber are not happy with the conversion process I would be happy for Lisa to join my syndicate, and I could convert her files and email them back to her so that she could have a normal .BMD file to upload from home. 1. Advance notice of changes to image downloads.
    2. Dave Mayall
    3. In order to improve the service that FreeBMD offers, we will shortly be upgrading FreeBMD from four to six servers. The additional servers will be used exclusively to store scanned images, releasing much needed disk space on the database servers. This move will mean changing the URL that transcribers use to download scans, from http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/GUS/ to http://images.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/ If your transcribers navigate to the scans via the FreeBMD site, you need take no action. If you provide links from your own syndicate site, you will need to update your links at an appropriate time. At present, it is intended that the new image servers will go live at 12:00 GMT on Monday 28th June, and you should make no changes before then. The current image directories will be retained until Monday 5th July to allow for a smooth transition, and will then be deleted. If this will cause difficulties for any Syndicate, they need to get in touch urgently. -- Dave Mayall ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net

    3. Ted, The most likely cause is that one of the libraries used by WinBMD has either been replaced or corrupted by another program. It is possible that re-installing WinBMD will not fix this but I have a program which will tell me if the person has the correct versions or not, and if they don't then I can send the correct one. If you send me the person's email address then I will send them the program. 3. Hi Tony This error is reporting that WinBMD cannot upload the file to FreeBMD. The first question to ask the transcriber is "Where you connected to the internet at the time?" Basically make sure they are connected to the internet for an upload. 3. Hi Richard Among the guidance I send to new transcribers (for post 1900 printed scans) is this passage below. By all means try it with yours. Jeff in Wales Before transcribing it is useful to set the ' Options' from the menu you get when you click on 'Options' at the top. These toggle on-off. I recommend Auto-Surnames in all Caps. Auto-tab on Picklist Select Enter key ignores auto-complete Move Picklist with main window Warn on Unknown Forename Show Forename Auto-Complete Show District Auto-Complete Show District Picklist Show Forename Picklist but not 'SpeedBMD Format' Using the 'Scanned Batches' drop-down menu I use 'Show scan image' and in the scan view options anti-aliasing . You can drag and re-size the WinBMD window, the scan window and the small picklist window. It is convenient to keep the picklist window to the right of the main WinBMD grid window, and to have the scan window above them, with the scale adjusted until one entry stretches most of the way across the screen. I have WinBMD as a small window in the lower 1/3 of my screen, with the scan view occupying the rest of the screen. ***I have a screen image showing this setup that I can send if requested.*** --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. For the third time this week one of the recruits to my new Syndicate has complained about having to type so many forenames by hand and wonders why WinBMD doesn't have a pick-list for names as well as districts.... For the third time I have asked him or her to check whether this option was in fact "switched off" on the Options menu - and in each case this proved to be so. I am wondering whether the downloadable version of WinBMD has somehow got this option disconnected - I can't believe that three transcribers could each accidentally lose the Forenames picklist. 3. I have a new transcriber who seems to hit brick walls every step of the way. She has finally got a file completed and now cannot upload it - this is the error message I received from her: Now I have the problem that every time I try to upload, I get a small screen with message that there is an error message "Runtime error 10050 Network subsystem failed" with the file and the whole thing closes down! When I go back in to it, a red message comes up saying "ERROR RECOVERY - WINBMD IS RELOADING THE LAST BATCH" <ok>." I have picked up her file myself this morning and temporarily uploaded it to my own files without problem. Does anyone know what this error message means - I think I've seen it before - was the syustem down for instance or busy? Or is this another instance of her failing to understand how to use the software? Melda Brunette, Brunette Syndicate Co-ordinator

So Melda and John (Pingham), when I get back I will work on an email for you to forward to any of you transcribers who are picking something from the default list that comes with WinBMD that is (vaguely) close to what they see is not what they should be doing, and that TWYS applies to all of the information on the page being transcribed, and include the reference to the official web page which describes the exceptions to this. 3. Hi Peter Catch-22 - until a large enough number of transcriptions have been done there is no knowing ahead of time what should be on the list! And in case there is any doubt, I have nothing against picklists - just against those transcribers who would rather pick something from the list than appreciating that they should be still typing what they see for the district name and volume number rather than adding the TWYS variants to their own picklists an using them. I know that St Olave vs St Olave Bermondsey vs St Olave Southwark has been given the most prominence on the lists, but there are more than a handful of cases that I've come across where transcribers are happy to pick Barnsley from the list when they should be typing something like B*y since looking at the scans show that they have picked Barnsley for entries that actually read Burnley or Bury! 3. Hi Peter I try to imagine explaining to some of my transcribers how to load a new and different picklist into the correct folder to be picked up by WinBMD. The mind boggles a bit. Worth talking to Ian Brooke about how to do it, maybe. But I still think the TWYS approach, perhaps indicating what you are likely to find as district names and how to add them to your personal picklist, is probably best. On Mary's point, this list came out of a page-range list built from 57 transcription files, a bit under 20% of the quarter in question, but I suspect it could be done on a lot less. The page ranges would not be so useful, but a list of non-standard districts probably would be. Jeff --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
