    3. If you are saying that the scans (i.e. images of the pages) are different then that has nothing to do with OCR which converts images into text. If the 1837 scan had been passed through OCR it would no longer be a scan. 1. 1837 Web Site
    2. Keith Simpson
    3. A transcriber of mine has been checking some amendments with the 1837 website and has found that one entry on the freebmd scan reads 336, whilst on the 1837 website scan it read 836. Now from keeping a record of previous page numbers 336 would fit within the range. But can somebody tell me if the 1837 scanned pages have been passed through an OCR SCANNER, because if they have this might expalin why 836 is shown. thanks Keith

    3. Hi Ian Thanks for that, but it seems that it doesn't work on my configuration for the public interface :o( although it *does* work for the transcibers interface :o) .... and I do not intend to even attempt to work out why! It did not install exactly 'as advertised' (i.e. I did not see the sample security window) and when I use chose.pl on TIFF files (eg my latest allocation from you in 1840B1) all I see is a grey page with the Alernatiff icons above it rather than the TIF image. Even after following the link they provide (If AlternaTIFF works here but not on other web pages, click here to reactivate it.) the result is the same. Using the 'View Image' menu option gives a "The page cannot be displayed' type of page. However going the transcribers route through the GUS structure to http://www.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/1840/Births/March/UKD-02/A-L/1840B1-B-0407.tif results in a nice display that can be read without needing to resize it (as is needed with the GIF files that I found that can be displayed by my version of Internet Explorer on my version of Windows XP). I've had no problems with it at all (in fact you can't even tell it's there until you click on a tiff in your browser) - I haven't however looked into how to uninstall it should I ever need to. I stopped reading when I reached the sentence "You can however definitely download the scans to disc by right-clicking on the page link and selecting "Save Target As"." because my browser does not get as far as this. Instead of a page link with a "Save Taregt As" option or a pop-up window with a choice of Open or Save, all I get is a window with an icon that usually represents a broken link. 3. Hi Mary, Actually I couldn't remember where I got it from at the time but I should have looked it up, sorry. http://www.alternatiff.com and it is very quick and easy. I've had no problems with it at all (in fact you can't even tell it's there until you click on a tiff in your browser) - I haven't however looked into how to uninstall it should I ever need to. Regards Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Trevan To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2004 9:20 AM Subject: Re: How to View TIF/TIFF files in XP Hi Ian I stand corrected! You didn't say where you found Alternatiff - if it's quick and easy I might install it. 3. Sorry Ian, but like several other helpful people on this list who have been praising Irfanview, you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick. The new route available to the general public which uses page http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl does *not* provide any way of downloading the image. This does *not* affect the existing mechanism for transcribers, just the mechanism for the general public to view the scans using the new button on the home page. The reason for the problem is a bug in Internet Explorer and it affects a number of version of OS, including XP. The fixes are different per OS, but for XP it requires an upgrade of XP itself (or change to using another browser!) And since I was only trying it to test out the new software before it went live, I do not need to fix the problem on my PC, so please, no more offers to help solve my 'problem' :o) Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ian Brooke" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2004 10:02 PM Subject: Re: How to View TIF/TIFF files in XP > Hi Ted, > I also have problems using XP Pro and I can't open the scans in the manner you describe either. You can however definitely download the scans to disc by right-clicking on the page link and selecting "Save Target As". It is also possible to open them 'on screen' but only by using a different scan viewer - there's one called "Alternatiff" which can add it's own toolbar to IE and when you click on a tiff in IE the new viewer opens and displays it - it's not as good as Irfan though (it only has 90 degree rotates and 1 level of zoom) but it works fine for me. > Ian > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Ted Southcombe > To: [email protected] > Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2004 12:41 PM > Subject: Re: How to View TIF/TIFF files in XP > > > Sorry Garry, but there is a deeper problem. 3. Hi Mary: I believe that the problem you are describing is not unique to Internet Explorer and Windows OS. I am a Mac user and the same problem exists. It is reminiscent of the problems that existed (and may still exist) for Mac users when the 1901 census went on line. Other browsers, such as Safari, DO work for Macs. On a more basic level I believe that requiring the general public to click through multiple windows to get at the data files and then have to guess at which image one wants does a real disservice to the image of freeBMD. The argument presented by Dave, that more exposure to ads is needed, is simply not a very good business model. Make access inconvenient and people just won't bother. 3. Hi Mary, What you say here is not entirely correct. It *is* possible to open a scan in IE 6 under XP Pro via the general public link IF you have the "Alternatiff" scan viewer that I mentioned in my previous email. Having opened it on screen it is also then possible to save it to disc. Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Trevan To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2004 2:26 PM Subject: Re: How to View TIF/TIFF files in XP Sorry Ian, but like several other helpful people on this list who have been praising Irfanview, you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick. 3. Hi Ted, I also have problems using XP Pro and I can't open the scans in the manner you describe either. I have always had all graphics files including TIF and TIFF associated with Irfanview in File Types. Downloads from the existing Scan Source site have always opened opened with no problems. It's just the new procedure which sends the downloaded file directly to Internet Explorer that causes problems as there is no step to save the downloading file to a folder. I gather from correspondance here and on Soc.genealogy.britain that I'm not the only one experiancing this diffilulty. I'm happy to wait until Dave and his team resolve the situation in their own time. Maybe XP SP2 will resolve these problems when it eventually arrives ?
