Hi Steve et al There is a very good reason for one file two pages on double page scans. This revolves around Scan2's automated allocation systems and the proper control of transcribed Pages. It is not a requirement for FreeBMD But SCAN2 System to function correctly IT IS A REQUIREMENT. One allocation is one transcribed file (may be one or two pages) At 01:05 PM 09/07/2004, Steve Gaunt wrote: >Well, as far as I know and from what seems logical, is that each page is a >seperate file; double page scan 250 for example, would return two files, 250 >and 251. Hi Jennifer, Ian et al I think you should be trying the new http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl which is where the link behind the button on the home page goes to. When you get to the stage where you are selecting the page, there are 4 buttons, one for each downloadable format. Display as PDF file Display as GIF file Display as JPG file Display as TIFF file It worked just fine for me in all 4 formats when I tried it earlier in the week :o) HTH Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jennifer Romero" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2004 9:36 AM Subject: Re: Images > Hi Dave > > Now where did I hear that you can't please all of the people all the time? <g>. Hello I've noticed lately that some Co-Ords may be having trouble getting emails to AOL members. I once did but not for a long time. The problem with AOL is they block most large webmail companies, like Hotmail & Yahoo. If you send from one of these it just doesn't arrive and with no 'Blocked' informative. It just goes Poof. Our syndicate has a Hotmail address but my solution is to use my local nz email address from my ISP, most I know offer 5 free email addresses, and I send any AOL emails thru this address. I have no problem getting thru this way to my AOL members, it's just takes a bit more effort to remember to change the From: address for some. If you don't have a local email address, try getting one from a 'small' webmail company. It's quite probable that it won't be on AOLs block list Try it Garry Kiwiz Syndicate Co-ordinator
There seems to be a problem with the tiff to jpg conversion.I decided to open a file I know to be stored as a tiff of about 206kb, as a jpg. I went in through the FreeBMD home page about 10.20 am UK time. It has come out as an mirror image, rotated left so the writing was upside down, size 2.83 MB . The gif version was about 950kb, again mirror image with the writing upside down. The pdf file was the same size as the tif original, and correctly oriented. The file in question was 1908M4-J-0185. In each case I used 'Open' rather than 'Save' . WinXP with up-to-date patches. Dave, Something strange going on here! Has the new script just gone into production a little bit early? choose4.pl seems to be the (or a) original version of the script. It displays a "?" rather than A-Z and as Ian states does not give you any button to select a format. choose.pl (link from the Home page) however does display four large buttons (PDF, GIF, JPG, TIF) on the screen where you select the page number you are interested in. I have double page scans in my syndicate's allocation. I advise my transcribers in their start-up notes to do them as one file exactly as Alan's proposals. However interestingly several seem to prefer to split them into 2 files which I have accepted quite happily. Actually, checking and verifying 2 page files can get quite daunting especially if a transcriber doesn't follow the 'rules' and goes his own way. I ask them to send their first file to me after doing one or two columns as their training exercise. I do check most uploads that the middle +PAGE line is there, especially after I forgot it once ! Well, as far as I know and from what seems logical, is that each page is a seperate file; double page scan 250 for example, would return two files, 250 and 251. That is what Croscan has been doing; why would it need to be one file just because it is one image? It is still two distinct pages. If it is not supposed to be like that then the scan numbers would logically be numbered in sequence instead of skipping one each time. Hi Alan If we were doing the double page scans we would ask them to transcribe them as separate pages i.e. two files named as per the page and not a single file including both pages. Your proposed wording suggests that they MUST be done as a single file. It also suggests that that the file name has to be the WinBMD format. That's OK for me but not for some syndicates as we know. I suggest the wording is changed to : 'A. If your syndicate co-ordinator tells you to transcribe each page as a separate file then you simply do what you have been doing with the single page scans and use the same scan for both pages. If your coordinator tells you to transcribe the scan as a single file then you treat the scan as a single page with a single filename but make sure that in addition to the +PAGE at the beginning and end of the file you enter a +PAGE between the two pages. For example: +PAGE,520 WAKEFIELD etc. as per your last paragraph.' Allan Are you referring to the typed/printed pages where there are two columns of data, such as in the 1839 Marriages, or are you referring to scans where both the left and the right hand side pages have been scanned as one entity? Hi Allan: When transcribing for my previous syndicate I used to include multiple scans in a single upload file. Each page was separated by the +PAGE flag, just as you describe. On occasion I would upload as many as a dozen scans in a single file, when the scans were handwritten with relatively few entries per page. My coordinator then had no complaints, nor did the file server. This was using the MacBMD software and not that terribly confusing PC stuff. The file naming convention was (and is, for the transcribers in my current syndicate) 1903B2F0150 for the "Fredericks" on the single page 150 of the June births of 1903 and 1903B2F0151_4 for multiple pages 151 to 154 inclusive. The "F" would remain even if the "G's" started somewhere in the set. I think this is very close to what you have indicated. If there are problems with it, please let me know. Peter Adams
Hi Allan Your example is fine BUT on some double page scans the two pages are not consecative. So in this case the instructions need to reflect the +PAGE,nnn in the middle where nnn is the Page number of the second scan and the +PAGE,nnn at the end, where nnn is the second page number plus one (even if the second page was the last page of the quarter.) Allan, I have a couple of problems with this wording. Firstly it assumes people are using WinBMD filenames - those using SpeedBMD or indeed WinBMD using Speed filename format might be confused with your example filenames. Secondly it assumes people are using page letters (the "W") - using the page letter is optional (even though I don't believe it should be!) in both WinBMD & SpeedBMD and again the example filename might confuse some people who have never seen it used. Thirdly (and this is slightly pedantic), users don't have to "add" three +PAGE lines as WinBMD enters the first one for them - they need to add the ones at the end of the first page and the end of file. I would suggest that you drop the examples/use of filenames completely, it doesn't really seem relevant - the important part is the inclusion of the +PAGEs. As long as the explanation states that the value entered in the page number field is that of the first page (520), and that at the end of the first page they add a +PAGE,n+1 (+PAGE,521) and at the very end +PAGE,n+2 (+PAGE,522) it should be Ok. The new version of the image display seemed to be generally well received, although some people regretted moving to a proprietary file format like PDF. So, in the interests of trying to please everybody, we have another new version of the interface. This one allows you to choose to have the image in any format you want, regardless of the format of the original.
