    1. RE: Upload report

    3. I know of no change to the site that might cause this and when I tried it I got the usual option box (open/save). Since the file is a .csv file it should open in Excel (if Excel is installed). 1. Syndicate Co-ordination - Allan's taking a break
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. Just a quick note to let Syndicate Co-ordinators know I will be taking a short break from FreeBMD activities as from today. Should there be any queries which can't wait until I'm back on line Co-ordinators are requested to email the Syndicate List [email protected] (if of a general nature) or [email protected] (if very specific to the Syndicate). To the best of my knowledge I have met all requests from Syndicate Co-ordinators for new allocations. I have some other outstanding queries which I will try and deal with within the next couple of hours otherwise they will be put on the back burner until I pick up the reigns again. 1. Deletion of Volunteers From FreeBMD
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. Just a reminder to Syndicate Co-ordinators about the ongoing process to delete from the FreeBMD database those volunteers who haven't uploaded any records even though they have been registered on FreeBMD for 12 months or so. Co-ordinators are requested to check their "Syndicate Maintenance" for details of the volunteers deleted by me as explained in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/delete_submitterID.html. The deleted volunteers are shown at the bottom of the "Current Submitters" window of the Maintain Syndicate page. This will give Co-ordinators opportunity to reallocate any transcription work given to the deleted volunteers. 3. Hi, Just a quick update on the server status. One of our servers is having a bit of a tizzy at the moment. That's a technical term that I won't explain further. As a knockon effect, the other servers decided to stop working in support. I have restored the other servers, but not the server which originally failed. As the failing server is the master server, you will continue to have problems with file management and other 'centralised' functions. We'll update you further when we can persuade the failing server to behave itself... cheers Graham hmm .. step 2 of server recovery .. find a big stick .. look threateningly at machine ... raise stick ....

    1. SCAN Appearence problem!
    2. Tony Meighan
    3. Hi, Some of you may have noticed a request for assistance that was sent to the Discuss list yesterday by one of my transcribers, See below. The problem that this lady is having is that when she opens the scan it appears smudged therefore is unreadable from approx the third line downwards. I have downloaded the very same scan and there is absolutely nothing wrong with its appearance. If anyone can offer any suggestions or would care to view a copy of the smudged image please contact me, I will fwd example. -- Best wishes Tony Meighan Hi All, I am having problems with scans. After I have done all the correct things to get the scan, when I go to open it either in Irfanview, or via WinBMD to transcribe, only the top three lines of the scan are readable on some and the others have long black lines as though the image has been dragged through a printer. This happened to one out of 8 files. I had been allocated the first lot to transcribe - only 1 readable. Second lot all four were the same yet I copied the whole series of the E letters to see what happened and all of them were OK. Can anyone help me please. Regards, Di

    1. Re: SCAN Appearence problem!
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. Hi Tony I had this problem with a transcriber who thought the black area of scan was real , and only did the top portion of each column. I think the problem is either an interruption of the connection during download, or a problem of lack of memory on the receiving computer. Three possible routes 1. Transcriber to check on available computer space and clear out some old internet files. 2. Transcriber to attempt download at one of FreeBMD's quieter times - after 2300 UK time and before 0800 UK time for example. 3. Someone - co-ordinator or transcriber's friend/relative with better internet connection - to download the scan and forward it by email when slow connection is less likely to mangle it than on a download. A further thought! . If you try to 'Open' a tif file in Windows XP direct from the web site you can get smeary mess. If you 'save' it ( right-click and 'save target as' from the quarter page of scan links' ) and open it afterwards once it is saved you get a much better result. I think you need to check what computer operating system and modem speed she has, and exactly how she is trying to acquire the images from the site. I hope one of these suggestions is on target. 3. Hi John My analysis was based on new recruits who registered as this was the only information I have on which to base my calculations. My main concern was to ensure that all Syndicates had equitable access to the pool of potential volunteers, based on my analysis this seems to be the situation as 23 Syndicates managed to accept new volunteers within the time frame of my analysis . 3. Fellow Coordinators, a while back I announced the latest version of of our syndicate's trancribed page checking program, which was received well by those few who use it. In order to encourage it's wider use we have now come up with a new version, mainly for coordinator use, which has an option to check multiple files and then produce an error report. Very useful if you are checking large numbers of your transcribers' files. A useful update is that the program checks the volume when an ambiguous districts such as Wellington, Newcastle, Newport etc crop up. Also importantly, this version is 12 times faster than the previous version. Of course, to use the program you need to have a page range for the quarter you are working on. Many of you haven't the time to bother with producing page ranges, so now we have come up with RangeBuilder, an Excel based program that will build an accurate range from a set of transcribed files. It will accept up to 65,000 entries and will turn out an accurate page range within 5 to 20 minutes. The new programs are downloadable from http://www.calverley.info/croscan/croscan2.htm regards Steve Gaunt Croscan > >

    1. Fw: A "demo" of our software?
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. Maybe I am one of the co-ordinators who hit new transcribers with masses of guidance , 'too much too soon', but I try to break it down into steps in separate emails, after an introduction to the processes. - downloading WinBMD downloading the scan and setting up header details transcribing verifying and uploading - I also try to persuade new transcribers to send me their first transcription to check after doing about 50 lines or half a column ( post1900 scans). This means that most systematic errors and misunderstandings can be identified and dealt with early on, before a whole page of effort has been expended on first approximations to district names or incorrect use of Uncertain Character Format. Focussed explanation can then be given about how to avoid misreading 5s as 3s, or 3s as 9s, or 'S' as 'N' or whatever is proving a problem for the transcriber. I can also check the header details are right for the scan. I also ask to see the first completed transcription before uploading, and verify it myself, providing feedback on where my reading varies from the volunteer's. This is also a stage where the intelligent use of secondary sources like page ranges, or occurrence of surnames in online sources can be introduced. Certainly I have had impulsive new volunteers who have raced ahead without reading the information given, but I hope I have used the experience to refine the induction material and process so that more recent volunteers have been less inclined to do so. If any co-ordinator would like copies of my standard starting-up emails to take anything useful for their own use, or to suggest improvements, just ask.
