Year mismatch between the File name and header contents. 2. Quarter " " " " " " " " 3. Event " " " " " " " " These files currently show up in the Suspect Report and are allowed upload to FreeBMD. Hi Alllan et. al. I think there should be a 4th check that the first page number should match the number in the filename also (at least for the +S header type) This is a WinBMD standard anyway as are the others. I would also like to see the end page number be required to upload and contain a number not just +PAGE, At 03:57 PM 30/11/2004, Allan Raymond wrote: >To Syndicate Co-ordinator Colleagues. > >I have taken on board comments from Co-ordinators following the recent >introduction of stringent checking for Age at Death files. > >As a consequence this is to give ADVANCE NOTICE to Co-ordinators of the >intention to adopt more stringent checking of files containing the following >four types of errors: > >1. Hi You may wish to visit my updated page at: http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/FreeBMD_Errorfiles.htm At long last I've completed the exercise of looking at a sample of files from each volunteer showing in Red in the volunteers File Management. I've corrected some files along the way which now leaves 791 files uploaded by 24 volunteers showing in Red. Despite some adverse comments from a couple of Co-ordinators, quite a number of the files appeared in Red because of errors made by volunteers rather the more stringent error checking introduced earlier this month. Typical examples found during my trawl through some files, 1. All records in a file conformed to the requirement not to include anything in the age at death field and then for no apparent reason the volunteer decided to add *,? or _ for one solitary record. This caused the whole file to be rejected. 2. Some files were shown in red due to more stringent error checking introduced ages ago and are unrelated to the age at death problem and the volunteers simply hadn't bothered to correct the files. More information can be found at "Messages in FreeBMD" http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/error-help.html . 3. Quite a number of files were from one name volunteers who decided they "knew" the age at death of the individuals in the Index and added it to their records. I've built up a terrific methodology for correcting the age at death files and propose to let this loose on the outstanding 791 files as soon as possible, unless the volunteer and Co-ordinator feels disinclined to take up this offer. It's easier for me to change the files rather than explain my process. As a parting comment Pareto's rule Pareto's rule states that a small number of causes is responsible for a large percentage of the effect, in a ratio of about 20:80. Any files shown with the RED error will be visible via Show Files but will not be included in Upload Report. Hi Alan Scan2 keeps a parallel copy of all files of it's transcribers. If you do correct any files belonging to Scan2 it is important that you also send me a copy. If not and some other corrections are made then your corrections may get undone !!!!! As transcribers also have a copy they can also nullify some corrections made by you. (If you made any changes that were not stoped by the new rules when uploading, or the new fix may be different from your fix to get upload accepted.) Following on from a thread in FreeBMD-Discuss There are 2 excellent utilities available to enable Syndicate co-ordinators to build their own page ranges. Jeremy Hakes updated Susan Harker's page checking program and it now has the facility to check multiple files and produce a page number error report for pages out of range or districts unknown. The error report is only generated for multiple files but you can simply check one file with the multiple file facility! If using the multiple file facility, it will also update the page range on request. He also produced a page range generator [virtually overnight!] that takes a number of files for a quarter [ideally about 35000 records] and produces a draft page range. This can then be used in conjunction with the page checking program. As a test, I ran the page range builder with 34 files of 750 records and then ran them through the page checking program to produce the error report. 15 minutes to get the draft page range and 7 to get the error report. The only drawback is that it doesn't like +PAGE in the middle of a file so I take those out before processing. www.calverley.info/croscan/croscan2.htm -- Philip Powell The Fellwanderers
Recently we have run into an unexpected problem while trying to set up 'mutual verifying'. Two of my transcribers who have Yahoo as their email package have found that if they receive a .bmd transcription file as an attachment they cannot save it in such a way that it is recognised by WinBMD or BMDVerify. Is there anyone out there who can describe how to receive .bmd files with Yahoo and be able to process them? I can see that the file contents could be included in the email text, then copy/pasted into notepad or similar, and then saved in a format BMDVerify would accept - but is there a simpler way?
