    1. Re: Lost Emails
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. With the help of Barrie all my lost files have been returned to their rightful place. Thanks to Co-ordinators who resent some duplicate copies of emails which were awaiting a response from me. Allan Raymond ----- Original Message ----- From: "Allan Raymond" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 10 January 2005 23:09 Subject: Lost Emails To Syndicate Co-ordinators Sugar! In my successful attempt a couple of hours ago to change to Broadband I accepted the offer to download a later version of Internet Explorer/Outlook Express. This had grave consequence. All my emails have gone walkies. Whilst I maintain a paper copy of allocations to Syndicate and keep spreadsheets of some other activities I am very much at the mercy of Co-ordinators supplying me with copy of emails which are still waiting a response from me. In particular, any Co-ordinator who has requested a transfer of volunteer is requested to resend their request to me. Apologies for any inconvenience but I'm totally gutted with the loss of all my emails especially as the same problem occurred about 3 years ago when I picked a virus. Regards Allan Raymond

    1. Transfer of Ownership of SubmitterIDs across to Syndicate Co-ordinators
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. To Syndicate Co-ordinators It may be useful to give my regular reminder about the facility available to transfer ownership of volunteer SubmitterIDs ( possible due to inactivity or not answering emails) across to their Syndicate Co-ordinator. Transfers are normally required to enable the Co-ordinators to corrects errors in files uploaded by the volunteers The process is explained in formal terms in: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/synaccess.html . In reality I hope the system is not that formal, a simple request to me (better if it is sent via [email protected] ) giving the name and SubmitterID of the volunteer who requires to be transferred plus confirmation the Co-ordinator has tried to make contact with the volunteer is all that is needed. Whilst I try to turn around requests within a week, there are occasions when it takes far longer. Please don't chase me up for requests outstanding for less than 7 days. As far as I am aware I have now met all requests for transfer of ownership.... unless any Co-ordinator knows something to the contrary. **** IMPORTANT **** http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/synaccess.html has been updated to take into account a modified process where transfer of ownership of a volunteer's SubmitterID is requested due to the untimely death of the volunteer. I have had a handful of such requests and I am most concerned that we do not cause any further distress to the volunteer's relatives by inadvertently sending any routine FreeBMD emails to them. Where a request is made by a Co-ordinator to take ownership of the deceased volunteer's SubmitterID, the Co-ordinator should also change the email address of the volunteer to their own address at the same time as they change the password. Please also add "Deceased - RIP" after the name of the volunteer e.g. Joe Bloggs (Deceased - RIP) This is a very sensitive issue and I wouldn't wish to cause further distress by this process, but it would identify to anyone involved in FreeBMD administration the situation regarding the individual? I'm open to any alternative suggestions from Co-ordinators. Regards Allan Raymond

    3. Jeff I copied the information below from the Syndicates List archives and was a response by Ian Brooke on 9 Nov 2004 to a similar query. "That is a very common error which happens usually when the FreeBMD website is overloaded and unable to respond to WinBMD's upload request in time. It is often the case that the file has actually been uploaded and the transcriber should login via Manage Your Files and check that first. If the file is there and complete then there is nothing else needed, otherwise they will just have to try the upload again at a less busy time." And I >never play with Cookies except from the cookie jar at tea time. OK, I give up. I've got a copy of the code in front of me, and I *KNOW* that looping back to the login screen is caused by the browser not sending back the right cookie. This can be because; 1) The client isn't accepting cookies 2) The client has got it's knickers in a twist and is storing an out of date cookie, rather than replacing it with the new one 3) UserID and password. You haven't got a copy of the code in front of you, and you can divine that the problem is server load, just like that. Why do any of us bother actually properly analysing problem reports to discover the cause, if the next thing that happens is that somebody simply announces that they are wrong. Correlation and causality are not the same thing. -- Dave Mayall

    1. Additional servers
    2. Dave Mayall
    3. For awareness ============= As you will probably know, we are in the process of adding additional server capacity to relieve the congestion on the site. At 16:00 today, the first of those servers was added to the server farm, as a final test of its functionality. Apart from a brief period of instability as the other servers adjusted to take account of the new arrival, no problems have been experienced. Given the lack of problems so far, the trial is to be extended, and the new server will remain on-line overnight. The performance will be reviewed tommorow, and if all is well, it will become a permanent fixture. Work is ongoing to commission the second additional server, and once both additional servers are on-line a review will be carried out of site usage and trends to determine our future hardware needs. -- Dave Mayall ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net

    3. Hi Dave If I did not change anything and you did not change anything. And computers are very predictable in doing something always the same way with the same information. The only thing is time and load that varies. Over the months this has shown itself Sometimes it works fast, sometimes it works slow sometimes it just hangs for an hour till i stop it. Ocasionally it does this back to the begining. and some times system not available. Yes I have cookies enabled. And my error we are talking about Syndicate Maintenance. not System upload report. Although just tried it and got nowhere. with it. So I am as frustrated as ever.
