    1. Latest update
    2. Peter Dauncey
    3. The latest update shows increases of 2,594,684 in the total number of records; 1,122,605 in the number of distinct records; and 1,160,379 in the number of unique records. The Year/Event showing the largest increase in total records is 1875 Births, but it would be misleading to highlight this as the area most likely to contain a missing ancestor. Although total records have increased by 452,909 (from 904,599 to 1,357,508), the distinct records have increased by 61,804 (from 824,721 to 886,525) and unique records have increased by just 32,579 (from 815,309 to 847,888). The bulk of the "new" records are second keying. I have therefore based my analysis on "distinct" records. There are 726,701 more Births. The big increases are for 1907 with 180,147 and 1891 with 121,882 but there are 9 other years with increases over 20K: 1878 (69,939); 1875 (61,804); 1842 (50,092); 1873 (42,956); 1844 (41,035); 1887 (31,564); 1890 (26,017); 1861 (26,004) and 1871 (23,644). There are 86,264 less Marriages than before. The only year with a sizeable increase is 1907 with 43,754. The major reduction is 1849 with -33,965, but there are 4 other years with reductions in excess of 10K records. There are 482,168 more Deaths. The big increases are for 1910 with 180,147 and 1888 with 92,860 but there are 4 other years with increases over 16K: 1852 (64,301); 1886 (41,522); 1847 (35,538) and 1841 (32,060) Happy searching/transcribing Peter Dauncey

    1. Latest Update- many deletions
    2. Peter Norman
    3. On seeing that the latest update had completed last night I ran some of my saved searches. These seem to reveal a large number of "new" entries and a correspondingly large number of deleted entries. Has something strange happened or was their extensive file tidying that has produced the same effect? Peter Norman

    1. Line numbers in 1884 Deaths 2nd Qrtr - virtues from Excel ... only 124, not always 125/column.
    2. Keith Tinkler
    3. I have been on 1884 deaths for some time - its a printed record very easy to read. As you may have noticed from an earlier I use Excel ... (and with ~500 deaths for Roberts in progress, many of them for districts with number 11b . its been very quick ....) ' However - I have grown accustomed to there being 125 entries per column, which with the intro line +PAGE means my columns end at enteries 126, 251 and 376. If I see a different number I suspect I've missed an entry. That has was always the case till the last batch and this one. My first column show a total of 125 (including +PAGE) so I doubled checked every column - but it was correct - only 124 entries. And this carried over to the other columns (which could be seen to visually align on the printed page, and which was confirmed once I'd done the entries.) I just mention this in case any coding assumes 125/column for checks ... When there was an upload glitch a week or so ago a message said there were more than 375 entries and wanted to reject a file (but this can happen of course if there are manual insertions), but when I tried later the file uploaded fine. 3. Helen and others There appears to be some confusion here. THERE is a facility to download the scans from FreeBMD the recognised route is via 1. Transcribers' Page at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vindex.shtml and click on "Scans available for transcription" which is shown under Volunteer Support & Resources. 2. This take you to Using Scanned Source at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/scan-source.html and click on "Web Scan source page" which is shown under How do I sign up? 3. This takes you to Transcribing Scanned Source at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/scan-source2.shtml where you can click on one of three links "BIRTHS","MARRIAGES" or "DEATHS" which are shown under "Scans can be downloaded from the following links". The problems the other volunteers and you are mentioning are specific to Scan2 Syndicate. Having said that I have just tried Derek's site and managed to download a scan without any problem. The links to the scans on Derek's site in fact point to the scans which are located on the FreeBMD site and which are accessible via the links in 3. above. Anyone else having problems with Derek's site should wait until Derek or Sue etc can respond. 3. Although the link to the transcription files is on the Scan2 site, they are actually downloaded from the FreeBMD site itself. Do we have the intermittent problem of disappearing files again? Please can you keep trying!! And Derek is receiving so many emails with viruses that he's having real problems with his emails - and has probably lost some. Send to Derek is not affected and daily update of the Scan2 site is not affected. Anne I'm not sure you want to know - smile .... > Query: > If you are not touch-typing, how do you check that you haven't committed > any typos without "looking up and down"? > *COMMENT ....I could ask tt's the same Q .... Wonders idly if touch typists have one eye on the source and the other on their transcription ..... and do they get migraines from split eyes? [juss jokin' - well mainly] Well --- its VERY hard to summarize my "style' - professional typists have been simultaneously amazed and horrified by how I operate. After many (far too many) years like this I am on quasi-auto pilot ..... but cant exactly explain how it works in words of any syllables. I did once use MacBMD but it drove me mad in no time flat. So then I went to a plain text editor for a couple of years working from hand written material that was usually so hard to read speed wasn't an issue .... Now I am on printed 1884 deaths and its heaven. > Query: > Even on the same page District names appear differently: I have seen, > for example, > > "London space C" > "LondonC" > "London space C full stop" and > "LondonC full stop" > > all on the same page. How does Excel's autocomplete feature differ then > from the WinBMD picklist feature? You surely have to look up and down to > check your autocomplete is using the correct (TWYS) version? On the whole I don't see too much variation in the printed material (WYSIWYG - hollow laugh!) so have not noticed that as a problem - but acknowledge it might be in some parts of the data. The auto-complete in Excel only works on a few of the repetitive names (I haven't figured out the underlying rules - it must have a buffer limit which I have looked for - but not found a way to expand) and on a given page I usually know pretty soon which will auto-complete - or wont. Once you hit return it enters the name and only does so once the letters so far are unique - you don't pick from a list - which would annoy me and slow me down .. I glance at the list typed every few lines and check against alignment on columns to the left .. and the jpeg being alongside the spreadsheet on the screen. I only use it for Districts, repetitive names or other entries are more easily handled with the drag down, and Command D (on a Mac) to copy into the active cell the entry in cell above. Well like I said, you may want to know, but you may not understand! - and I'm not sure I understand either, but it works quite well for me - and nothing could be done to speed me up - xcept rehab. I have never found a touch typist who understands a fast 3 or 4 fingered glancing habitué like myself .... > .....And with Excel you cannot use > BMDVerify for proof-reading! > No I cant - but there you are ... I use a paper edge against the screen to fix the line in the source and scroll a line at a time in the transcription. Keith

    3. Lucille I know you are particularly keen to know how thing are progressing on the scans and hardware front and I concluded the various discussion by mentioning I would have a look at doing a "News Flash" Web Page to keep everyone up to date. I've gone away from this idea and instead have gone down the road of including details of scan progress etc in our News Page at: http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/news.html . So if you need to know progress on scans etc, this is the place to look in future. I will be arranging to have it updated as soon as possible after the next update has been completed.
