If you are talking about " accurate transcription " then why does WinBMD change the surnames from UPPER case to LOWER case ? Thus changing the EXACT copy of what is transcribed. I'm not trying to be awkward or dig up old discussions, but there seems to be a lot of confusion. 6 months ago (fter transcribing for nearly 2 years), I started putting in full stops after JOHN P. as I thought that is what was required, now I'm being told differently. Andrew -----Original Message----- From: Steve Gaunt [mailto:steve@email.hinet.hr] Sent: 06 September 2003 12:03 To: FREEBMD-DISCUSS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: re: fullstops. The only reasons for putting the fullstops as far as I know are: 1. Something to do with consistancy in transcribing and the software at FreeBMD and double keying. 2. A promise to transcribe the data as is. If the software is based an the accurate transcription of every fullstop, comma, etc, then there is the need to transcribe as is, though I am told that double keying would involve different source, which may not even carry the full stop, though I may have that wrong (David, refresh my memory) Other than the two reasons stated above, there is no reason at all to transcribe full stops. The original handwritten scans didn't carry them; they were put there in later versions. So: perhaps the software can be "rewired" so that full stops have no significance? Then it wouldn't matter if they were transcribed or not. As for the second reason, I doubt if whoever the promise was made to would care in the slightest about full stops. Perhaps they should be approached? We have already broken from the promise to reproduce as is by the insertion of surnames where duplicate surnames are indicated by a line. Perhaps also the software can be "rewired" so that full stops have no significance? Then it wouldn't matter if they were transcribed or not. It would also stop these discussions popping up every six month or so. I can't understand why on one page you get variations David P............... John P. .............. If full stops are important, isn't that data as well?? This is what I posted NEARLY FOUR YEARS AGO. (20th January 2000 - DISCUSS list) quote..... Having been allocated Births 1858 Sep as part of the web scan syndicate, I duly did my bit of these nice type style pages. My modus operandi is to check prints of my SpeedBMD files against the books at the FRC on my rare visits there. (It is a 250 mile round trip for me.) I went this week. I was surprised to find that the books at the FRC for this quarter were still of the Handwritten Copper Plate variety. Surely if someone in the past has typed the data for the production of fiche, the FRC should be using that typed data. Why aren't they?? They are not making life easy for the general users, are they? The same was true of Births 1854 Sep, which I had also been allocated. Secondly I noticed that the books had names along the lines of Smith, Ann Elizabeth, whereas the typed fiche had the name converted to Smith, Ann E. This again, I consider is not in the best interests of the users. I declined to enhance all my names to the full middle name variety, but ponder the loss of data that will result in FreeBMD. Any comments? ..... unquote. I never got a reply - not at all. It just goes to show that capitalisation and punctuation is seen by the top table are FAR MORE IMPORTANT than the names we transcribe. I'm sure this has been said before, and I understand that FreeBMD is doing an EXACT transcription of the indexes, but are FULL STOPS really that important ? Joe Public who is searching the index for a name won't care if there is a full stop or not, and the full stop isn't relevant in the searches. I'm sure the GRO won't care if a full stop is there or not when the someone requests a certificate, so why is there such a big fuss about them ? If it's difficult to keep the transcribers supplied with sufficient scans of acceptable quality, then I would have thought it imminently suitable and sensible to spend time correcting existing entries. Why the big aversion to this?? It was Dave Mayall in his message to the Discuss list on 11th August that said.... Quote 4) Should we have people going to the FRC to check entries? a) Yes, and at some point we will arrange this formally 5) Should we be producing suspect entry reports? a) Yes, and we will. Unquote I still think that while Derek Hopkins (and other syndicate co-ords) may OPT to take on upwards of 3,300 transcribers, if those transcribers do not get the support they need and the co-ords have to place e-mails like Derek Hopkins did, then FreeBMD should not ALLOW that many volunteers in a single syndicate. Allan Raymond says below that there are more volunteers for syndicate co-ords waiting in the wings. Why not accept them and get syndicates started on correcting entries??? Hi Keith, I use a Mac for transcription and have done many files for FreeBMD with and without accents. If you want to forward your file to me to look at to see if I can see anything that might help, please go ahead and do that. Best Shirley

Each Co-ordinator has the option to turn off the "accepting volunteers" button for their Syndicate. All Co-ordinators do this on a regular basis. Each Co-ordinator has the option to take on more volunteers to help with their Syndicate Administration. Some are already doing this, Scan2 is one of them. I asked in the past what was required to be a co-ordinator, and I was told that they didn't need anyone else. They just needed someone to correct existing entries. I have the character - and I tried a direct patch like you suggested (I am on a Mac so F4 must be a PC thing - but I got one from Key Caps on my Mac - prior to that I used a key combination that puts one there) - but FreeBMD wont accept the file with it in there when I try to upload. Its the work round for THAT which I need. Keith
I have the name BÂTEAU with a circumflex on the first A, 1884 deaths 3rd Quarter I have it in my Simpletext file, but the upload to FreeBMD wont accept it - do I enclose the letter in quotes? I could find nothing in Archives of the Knowledge base that was directly relevant, nor in the DISCUSS archives. Keith
