I also had an ancestor who was killed in France (in 1916) and the death was registered in England. The Family Records Centre (now closed) used to have a separate section for military deaths, they were recorded separately from the general population, so that would explain why they are not on FreeBMD. If you can track down the date of death on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, you should be able to get a death certificate from DirectGov. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Birthmarriageanddeathcertificates/DG_175628 I also had the MoD do a search for my ancestors service record for a fee, but the majority of the WW1 service records were destroyed by German bombing (about 60% if I remember correctly) in WW2. Finally, you can get a copy of the soldier's medal record from the national Archives in Kew, as far as I know casualties were automatically awarded a posthumous medal.
