Hazel To help identify and remove any inconsistencies in our instructions Where exactly did you see the instructions to transcribe Mother's name was given as Smith or Jones, you mention *under transcribing, section 13, comment and theory?. Can you please supply the link for section 13, comment and theory? I should perhaps mention the instructions in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6u which mentions #COMMENT(2) entry reads <alternative> for <field> has been in place since at least mid 2007 possibly before you started transcribing for FreeBMD. Hullo Allan and all, Hazel's information comes from the Transcribers' Notes I have been issuing to members of my syndicate since well before 2007, so the inconsistency, if one there be, rests with me. I have modified my notes on a regular basis to try to keep up with the latest thinking and advice on many aspects of transcribing for FreeBMD but saw no need up to now to change this particular wording which seems perfectly adequate and clear. Previous responses have suggested that precise consistency was not necessary. If you believe that it is indeed incorrect then I will of course reissue my notes with whatever wording is required. The current page number queries are another example of the minefields which can arise and which featured on this list a while ago. Every time I issue guidance on page number formats it seems that another irregular version of supplementary or referred entries appears which breaks previous guidance.
