Patricia The scan source used by our volunteer is somewhat unclear and transcribed to the best of his/her ability using the FreeBMD process for showing unclear letters/characters. Using the information you supplied and searching for an entry Bav* in 1910 Dec quarter I came up with Bav[e_]rsto[c_]k,Cord[e_]lia E You would have been able to send the following correction. ************************************************************* Surname: Baverstock Given names: Cordelia E The source of their information has been given as: FreeBMD Scan ACDB-01/A-J/1910M4-B-0056.tif. ************************************************************* This provides all the information to enable a decision to be made on whether the correction is valid or not and for it be acted on. The process to report corrections will work if the instructions are followed. In particular I reproduce the following from the Corrections Page: "It is NOT possible to apply a correction based upon Census, IGI, Certificate, Family Bible, etc. This is because names are recorded as they appear in the GRO Index". "Corrections MUST be based on evidence of THIS entry in the index. Corrections based on the reference of the other party to a marriage or of spelling of name used for another event for the same person are NOT valid" " When completing the source field, please just tell us, in as few words as possible, where you found the information. Lengthy explanations, or worse still spirited advocacy supporting the correction are unhelpful." You may wish to have another go at submitting a correction either taking into account my comments or those on the Corrections Page. I tried to find her and came up with a 'not found'. Fortunately I knew her husband, (Wallace) Beckingham and found him. When I looked for the page of entries I found that your transcriber had experienced great difficulty in reading the entry for Cordelia. I tried to report it, filling in the missed letters, but your system would not allow me to submit the report as it did not comply with your criteria. Had I not known that Aunt Delia had become Mrs. Beckingham I would not have got any further with my search for the date. What went wrong with my submission? Surely there is some flexibility when it comes to filling in missed letters in a relative's name where the transcriber has been unable to read the entry? I can appreciate that someone's family notes are not necessarily proof, but I tried to give you the entry for her birth to substantiate my correction March qtr 1877 Portsea Island 2b 612 but this was rejected. I find FreeBMD indispensable for my family history, but why has it become so much more difficult to make reports to you? Regards Trish Lovell
