In a handwritten scan, I have Josh where the h is underscored and superscript (short for Joseph?). Can anyone suggest how I should transcribe this, please. Bill Hounslow
If there is a small raised letter and a symbol below it clearly indicating an abbreviation, it seems sensible to reproduce that symbol as a full stop, the modern way of showing an abbreviation. This is often seen in district names with St. for Saint or Mt. for Market, but also on occasion with forenames. St. Saml. Wm. why not Josh. ?
