    3. Sorry to add my pennyworth to what to others looks like an open-and-shut case... but I have just given contrary advice to one of my syndicate transcribers, who asked: "On 1862D20553 scan, Wolfran and Richard Cottingham are recorded out of sequence. The compiler realised the mistake and has placed asterisks on either end of their surnames. I have kept the wrong order (TWYS) but do I include those asterisks in my transcription, which of course mean something different in Free BMD speak?" I replied that the asterisks should be ignored, as should the wrong ordering of forenames - on the grounds that the "correction" could have been made by anyone, official or otherwise, at any time before the scan was made. I also opined that keeping the items out of sequence did not matter, as they would still be found by the FreeBMD search engine.
