My advice would also be to ditch NTL - sounds like it's not worth the hassle. I'm with Optus which is excellent. You can go to the spam inbox & check if all emails - just in case an allowed email slips through. (Rarely occurs). Also, there are a number of very good ISP's available that are reliable.
