Could FreeBMD offer to do this work with its volunteers? Surely if there was some advertising involved we could get a lot more volunteers to transcribe. Contact the BBC and "Who do you think you are" presenters to get this out to the public. People who want to learn computer skills could help to transcribe and learn computer skills at the same time. Come on FreeBMD let's get the ball rolling.

FreeBMD and its related projects FreeCen and FreeReg work on transcribing data which, though subject to copyright, is already in the public domain. The material which the ONS is now proposing to transcribe is not. I find it absolutely extraordinary that anyone could get upset about the security issues involved in outsourcing this project to India but then suggest that as an alternative the potentially sensitive data is handed over to completely unregulated volunteers all over the globe, working, completely unsupervised, in their own homes!
