If you were to search births 1926 onwards for Carapa* you would discover yet further spellings. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6af shows that #THEORY is appropriate if you have reason to believe that what is typed in the index may be wrong. "#THEORY indicates that what has been transcribed is what is in the index but there is reason to believe the index is wrong. It describes what it is believed should be in the index." So for the marriage of Ms HUGHES , you could follow with #THEORY spouse surname possibly Carapanageotis if you wished.
