Hello I'm transcribing 1930B2-B-0074 and there are handwritten entries at the bottom of the page, however some are crossed out - do I leave them out of the transcription or do I put them in with a note to say that they were deleted? And do I put them in at the end of the page or where they fit into the alphabetical list? regards Denise
Hello Denise Even though an entry is crossed through, enter it and follow with a #COMMENT line. This entry in the Transcribers' Knowledge Base explains: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6z See how the handwritten entries have a symbol next to them? Insert them in the typed column at the point where you see the corresponding mark: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6g Hope this helps :-) -- Nowl Denise wrote on Sat, 18 Oct 2008: >Hello > >I'm transcribing 1930B2-B-0074 and there are handwritten entries at the >bottom of the page, however some are crossed out - do I leave them out >of the transcription or do I put them in with a note to say that they >were deleted? Hi Denise All entries on the index page should be entered, even is several seem to refer to be very similar to each other. If there is a clear indication where the handwritten entries should be inserted, put them there, following Transcribers' Knowledge Base (TKB) question 6(g) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6g If an entry has been crossed through, put it in but follow it in the next line with #COMMENT Entry crossed through, all written in the surname column., as in TKB 6(z) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6z If the entry has a an entry such as 'see D'54', put it into the 'page' column as it is. This is a cross-reference to a late entry as in TKB 6(q) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6q. This also advises you to enter a for the volume if no volume is shown. If you have difficulty putting in the apostrophe, follow advice recently given on this list. A way to enter a ' character in the page number field in WinBMD: Type a ' character in another field (e.g. forename) in WinBMD. Select the character by dragging the mouse over it. Press [Ctrl + X] to copy and remove the character. Place the cursor in the appropriate place in the page number field and press [Ctrl + V] to paste the character. In your page The entry at the foot of column 1 goes in where the mark is. The Bell,Bernice entry goes in where the mark is after Bell,Beatrice L. District is Spalding,? The two Bell,Elizabeth B. entries go in where the mark is after Bell,Elizabeth A., with #COMMENT Entry crossed through between them. Note that the district is Chelmsford,? as no volume is shown, and that the mother's maiden name seems to be spelled differently in the two entries, also one shows Mch'38 and the other see M'38 , though both refer to the same quarter. The two Bell,Elizabeth F. entries also go in after Bell,Elizabeth A. and it makes sense to put them in after Elizabeth B., though the symbols appear possibly in the opposite order. Make your own mind about that. Note that the page number is 802B Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 18, 2008 4:27 PM Subject: query on handwritten notes > Hello > > I'm transcribing 1930B2-B-0074 and there are handwritten entries at the > bottom of the page, however some are crossed out - do I leave them out > of the transcription or do I put them in with a note to say that they > were deleted? Hi Denise You wll have seen that all 3 of the crossed out records in the second column have been replaced with other handwritten additions essentially the same. What we do in these cases is to enter the record, as indicated on the page, that has not been crossed out and enter a comment to say what is on the scan. A comment is entered in its entirety in the Surname column immediately below the record to which it refers. It must start with #COMMENT and nothing else is entered in the row. In the first case on the page I would enter : Bell,Elizabeth J.,Turner,Barnet,3a,802B #COMMENT Asimilar entry has been crossed out. Note that in the other 2 there is no volume number for the district names so you should enter Spalding,? and Chelmsford,? in the district column. Both entries should be followed by a similar comment to the one above. If you don't know how to enter the ' in the page column for see June'36 and See M'38 please get back to me. This conflicts with http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6z which should be followed. Hello Denise, The transcribers knowledge base deals with this question, see the link. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6z Basically, you insert the entry aphebetically where indicated if it is hand written twice at base of column, and include any crossed through entries at the end of the column, with a #COMMENT "Entry crossed through" or words to that effect.
