    1. Tip of the Day (No. 6) - Alternative Spouse Names in Marriage Records
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. This is the sixth in a series of "Tip of the Day" to help volunteers who are transcribing for the FreeBMD Project. Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. Also any suggested improvement to the wording of this "Tip of the Day" is also encouraged. The Transcribers' Knowledge Base at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u provides the definitive advice for dealing with alternative names in records. I've been carrying out some checks of recent files uploaded by a number of transcribers to see how they dealt with records containing alternative names. In particular, where alternative spouse names are shown against a marriage record the advice in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u in a number of instances was not being followed The correct way to transcribe a marriage record such as Dunn,Charles,Curphey or Bradley,W.Derby,8b,697 using the advice in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u is Dunn,Charles,Curphey,W.Derby,8b,697 #COMMENT(2) entry reads Curphey or Bradley for spouse name Dunn,Charles,Bradley,W.Derby,8b,697 Please note, the #COMMENT(2) line is located between the two entries under consideration. 3. Would it be possible to run a query against the database to see where there's "(space)or(space)" in the spouse name field and let transcribers know so we can correct it? I don't know how much work that is for the programming staff. 3. Thanks Allan - I think it's also worth stressing that there mustn't be a space between #COMMEMT and (2), as otherwise the #COMMENT is only applied to the line above, and not the second one below (the examples in your Tip of the Day are correct, of course). I learnt this from a posting on this list earlier this year, and it enabled me to go back and correct a mistake I'd made in several of my files. Cheers, Mike 2008/10/28 Allan Raymond <[email protected]> > This is the sixth in a series of "Tip of the Day" to help volunteers who > are > transcribing for the FreeBMD Project. > > Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. > > Also any suggested improvement to the wording of this "Tip of the Day" is > also encouraged. > > The Transcribers' Knowledge Base at: > http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u provides the definitive advice > for dealing with alternative names in records. > > I've been carrying out some checks of recent files uploaded by a number of > transcribers to see how they dealt with records containing alternative > names. 3. There was further correspondence about this as a result of your posting. I asked for a list of files with the space. Barrie did a quick check, found there were a lot and realised that most would never get corrected. The outcome was that Barrie changed the system so that now it doesn't matter if the there is a space between the #COMMENT and the (2). I don't keep copies of messages on the FreeBMD newsgroups so without a search through the archive file I can't point you to the actual message but I think it may have been on the syndicates list.
