    1. Tip of the Day (No. 7) - Transcribing Correct Volume No for Smethwick District for 1932 September Quarter and later
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. This is the seventh in a series of "Tip of the Day" to help volunteers who are transcribing for the FreeBMD Project. Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. Also any suggested improvement to the wording of this "Tip of the Day" is also encouraged. This tip in particular applies to transcribers working on 1932 September and later Index Pages. Smethwick Registration District was created 1.10.1932 with corresponding Vol Nos : 6b (1932-46), 9B (1946-74). WinBMD is incorrectly showing the Vol No as 6n rather than 6b A number of volunteers are selecting the Vol No from WinBMD standard District Picklist rather than typing/transcribing what they see (TWYS). This is causing quite a number of Correction Requests to be issued to the transcribers concerned, causing additional work for the corrections team and the transcribers. A longer term solution is being sought to the problem but for the present the following action is recommended. 1. Open up WinBMD as per normal 2. Select "Edit" 3. Then select "Edit Districts" 4. This will bring up the "WinBMD District Editor" 5. Select "Add New District" and insert "Smethwick,6b" in the box and select the "Add this District" Once you have done this the next time you encounter Smethwick in the Index you will be given the choice of either: Smethwick,6b or Smethwick,6n in the drop down menu of the District Picklist. Select the one that corresponds to the Index, which in the majority of instances should be Smethwick,6b and just happens to be the first in the drop down menu list. You can find further information on editing or adding Districts in WinBMD Help search for "Editing Districts". Allan Raymond FreeBMD Co-coordinator of Syndicates
