I had been wondering whether it might be a good idea to suggest that new transcribers who are Vista users install WinBMD to a location other than C:\Program Files. Would anyone like to comment? Michael, as I understand it, the problem is that Vista's tighter security doesn't allow programs to write to folders or subfolders under \Program Files -- which is where WinBMD's default Output folder will be if the program is installed there. Instead the file path is invisibly remapped to the VirtualStore while the program happily hums along not realising anything has changed :-) Jeff's suggestion of using Define Save Path to set the "output" folder to one of your choice is a good one, and this is what I do under XP. However, I'm guessing (I don't have Vista myself so can't check) that the remapping would affect more than just transcription files. What about WinBMD.ini, where program preferences and file and ID details are stored, and the district, name and supplementary district files? These are all written to and updated all the time and I suspect the most current ones may also be found in the VirtualStore (Vista users please correct me if I'm wrong about this). Mightn't it save a lot of confusion and make backing up these important files easier if WinBMD were installed outside \Program Files in the first place, avoiding the permissions problem? Not having Vista myself yet, there may be some disadvantage I haven't appreciated, but maybe it's a thought? -- Nowl Allan Raymond wrote on Wed, 19 Nov 2008: >Michael > >I quite agree with you, it seems to be a little convoluted to go to user, >virtual store etc. > >It should only be necessary to go to C: and locate the WinBMD folder. I use Vista and have installed WinBMD under c:/users/keith//winbmd. As Nowl mentioned, I had problems trying to install under programme files, so opted to install under Users instead with not a hint of trouble since. Hope this helps keith -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Nowl Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 10:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: WINBMD Output file I had been wondering whether it might be a good idea to suggest that new transcribers who are Vista users install WinBMD to a location other than C:\Program Files.
