Nicholson Gateshead 10a 1233 Gilleran, (Female) --- Kensington 1a 179 Is the --- in mother's maiden surname column a "ditto" mark (as it would be in the child's surname column) so that I should transcribe it as Nicholson, or does it mean something else (e.g. no name) that I should transcribe as ---? Hence you use Uncertain Character Format (UCF) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml#ucf and put in a question mark in its place. Gilleran (Female) ?
