I seem to be getting the digests in batches. Today i received 5,6 and 8 all at the same time. I received No 7 two days ago. Around Christmas the same thing occurred with a batch of 9 and again only one arrived correctly. Is this a BMD or ISP problem. JBB
I have also been experiencing problems with the mailing lists since December 2008. There has been a problem at RootsWeb (they host the FreeBMD mailing lists). Please see this post from Allan Raymond dated 23rd Dec 2008: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/FreeBMD-Admins/2008-12/1230048167 There is an update on RootsWeb stating that the problem may have resolved: http://rootsweb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/rootsweb.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=-aY22-nj John. Every now and again the Rootsweb servers throw a wobbly. When they recover they spew out all the things they have been saving up instead of sending, so message are received out of order. [not a technical explanation....] If you are puzzled, look at the date and time the messages were sent. Different lists are on different Rootsweb servers, so not all lists are affected at the same time. Occasionally if you go to the Rootsweb home page and click on Help you find a big message on an orange background explaining the latest problem. JBB > Hi John, ==In Short== On this occasion, RootsWeb. ==In Long== On this occasion it looks as though the list server at RootsWeb that hosts the FreeBMD mailing list has been wonky on **delivering** email, and delivering it to everyone, not just one ISP. I cannot tell whether it was all mail, or just digest mail. Inbound mail looks to have been fine. To my analysis, it would seem that the digests have been prepared as normal and put to the mail queue for delivery. The server would be set to try and deliver on creation, and if it fails it would then requeue the mail for subsequent delivery. Here it seems the mail queue hasn't been cycling, and when they have come to clear the queue it will deliver them as it finds them and as the receiving ISP will receive it, hence out of order. A number of possible reasons, however, from my analysis of the mail process, my thought for mail to be delayed for that period of time, in that means would simply would be it was not noticed, so is either neglect or over-allocated personnel. The resources that RootsWeb, via the parent company, allocates to mailing lists is a lot less than it used to be, both in terms of time and skills. [I used to know one or two things about mail server and mailing list servers, so it is not a totally uninformed opinion.] Regards Andrew List-admin for FreeBMD-Admins mailing list -> Visit http://FreeBMD.rootsweb.com
