My computer is an unbranded desk top unit with a 1 terrabyte HD, Windows7 Pro op-system about a year old. I was using WinBMD v4 previously on an old computer with Win XP and then continued on this new computer for a year until about 2 weeks ago, when I upgraded WinBMD from v4 to v5 (firstly uninstalling v4 then installing v5 and later upgrading with the v6 patch). I was( for last 7n years) saving both Image and BMD data files in a Directory called 1_DATA\FreeBMD. On the old computer with Xp as far as I can recall data was saved in a path Viz C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\1_Data\FreeBMD. In Windows7 on new computer WinBMD data files and images were saved in path Viz: Libraries\Documents\My Documents\1_Data\FreeBMD. I have for about last 15 years always saved all my data files from all programs e.g. Word, Excel, Photoshop, PAF, Mapinfo, etc in ...My Documents\1_Data\XXX------And everything has always been OK except for WinBMD using V5/6 I now realise that files transcribed and saved after the v5/6 upgrade are not appearing in the usual FreeBDM directory along with all previous BDM files and Image files. I could only access those very recent files within the WinBMD program, and only those still on the small drop down box from <Files> but not from the full list from Files>Open (they were not visible).. I searched with Explorer and found the missing files in another Directory call FreeBMD but with different path The Image and old and new Data files are being saved at following path C:\ Users\Windows7\Documents\1_Data\FreeBMD.. Also the recent files that were missing in the other directory all had a small lock type insignias on their names suggesting a security issue after the upgrade. So now though I can retrieve and edit files recently used and listed in the small drop-down box at <Files>, and also could not open in Explorer or WinBMD any new or old BMD files in any directory. Windows also just now did not have the BMD file extension in the list of all acceptable extensions. So now after me trying to solve the problem with about 10 hours experiments etc., I hired an IT consultant who, though not a boy, had never seen this problem before and after two hours with me his only solution was to arrange the saving of all Data and Images in the C:\Program Files (x86)\WinBMD\Output Directory and because that would not be safe place if a major back-up recovery were done, he installed a batch program to reasonably easily copy all Output Directory to C:\Users\Windows7\Documents\1_Data\FreeBMD directory on a daily or weekly basis where in a Document directory they would not be violated during as rebuild. I notice that the v5/6 files in the C:\User\Windows7\Documents\1_Data\FreeBMD still have the little lock insignias but can be now opened normally this may be because the IT man entered .BMD as an allowable extension. We had to also change the BMD Verify program to use the Output directory and it's a bit of a nuisance as it only opens file list in Name sorted rather than Date as before. I can wear this as I will get used to working with the search function. All this to me is an outcome which is messy and I am hoping that this problem has arisen before and there may be a better solution you could put before me. Any help will be appreciated. I notice too that V5/6 does not open cleanly any old files as there are very different headers and apparently column sometimes too, and it appears there are some difficulties to save an edited old file. I looks like easiest is to edit text files on the WEB site and forget about fixing owner copies. Can we look forward to a better resolution of these issues or am I doing something wrong? Cheers John
