Peter's description is fine. I agree that the key step is to close down the computer after installing WinBMD, and restart it before you try to use it. Might I say that as long as you have transcribed something - even one line- and saved it, you can close down WinBMD using Save Batch and Exit in the 'File' menu, then upgrade to WinBMD version 6. You don't have to have completed a whole transcription before doing so. WinBMD version 6 has so many advantages for dealing with typed pages it seems desirable to get new transcribers using it as soon as reasonably possible. I recommend closing down the computer and restarting after upgrading to WinBMD version 6, before using it again. I also recommend that TKB 3(f) http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#3f be followed as soon as possible, to make sure that the transcription files are stored in 'Documents' where they are much easier to find. This is particularly the case if a transcriber has reason to send a copy of a transcription to a syndicate co-ordinator, for checking or advice.
