    3. It is a standard feature of WinBMD Version 6 that the District File is replaced (if a new version has been deployed) whenever you send a file to FreeBMD. This means that all active transcribers should have the same accurate version of the 'default' district list, and fewer erroneous districts should creep into transcriptions. You will recall that Ian Brooke sent a message to this mailing list on 6th May headed 'District File' advising that a new district file was about to be deployed. Please bear in mind that ordinary users of WinBMD are NOT expected to mess about with (or 'customise' ) the WinBMD_Districts file. If while using WinBMD you add any extra abbreviated districts ( or deviant spellings) which then show up in your picklist, the place where they are stored is WinBMD_Supp_Districts. That is the way WinBMD is designed to be used, and for the great majority of users there is no need to know 'how it works' or where particular data is stored, it is simply a delight that it does work so well and makes transcribing so straightforward. [However, for the benefit of Chris and Nick and anyone else who has 'customised' their WinBMD_Districts file here is what you need to know: To find your saved copy of your old district list ( with any special features some of you may have built in or deleted) you go to C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Files and then in Vista or Windows 7 you need to select 'compatibility files'. This will then direct you to a location which will be along the lines of .......Local\VirtualStore\WinBMD\Files. It depends the date or time when your Districts list was replaced exactly what the name of your saved copy will be. Mine is called CopyofDistrictFile160511222357 and is a txt file. ] A quick comparison of the old and the new District Files suggests that the new one is rather more user-friendly, with districts like Anglesey E. and Barrow S. instead of Anglesey East and Barrow upon Soar. As these are the abbreviations we commonly find when transcribing typed pages from 1911 and later, it is very helpful to find them appearing by default. Well done, Ian. 3. Thanks for that excellent explanation Jeff. I can't take credit for the file contents though - that goes to the district aliasing team, I just reformat and deploy it. I would just expand on one thing. The new district files do not just contain 'cosmetic' changes to the names, occasionally errors are found in the list, for example an incorrect volume number, incorrect year the district is formed etc., and these errors do get fixed. Unless people use the latest district file it is possible for these errors to affect their transcriptions. It is very important that people do not revert to the old file unless absolutely necessary. 3. I hope nobody misconstrued my comments as being critical of Ian's work. As a programmer myself I know how difficult it is to please all of the users all of the time. The current modus operandi is, as Jeff points out, the best solution for the great majority of users. The fact that we were warned in advance and that the program informs the user when a new district file has been down-loaded means that those of us who (at least think they) know what they're doing can take appropriate steps and incorporate Ian's changes into their files. I'd like to take the opportunity to echo Jeff's sentiments and to also say Well done, Ian. 3. Sorry if I caused offence, but I don't accept all the comments. Between 6th May (and I can't find a copy of Ian's message in my files but I'll accept that I may have received one) and 16th when I was affronted by the new List, I'd uploaded 20 files without getting the replacement. So I might be excused for having forgotten the forewarning. And I'd also remind everyone that I asked for the download to be optional. Since transcribing with the latest version, I have already had to add one District (in 1933), though for the life of me I cannot remember what it was! The biggest problem for me is caused by the dreaded space or not after a full stop. With the new list, if I type 'W.', I get a list of 10 of which the first 4 have the space and the last 6 no space. Only 2 districts are duplicated...W.Derby & W.Ashford. I expect there's a good reason for having to include those with the space after the stop. Can someone enlighten me? Finally, as regards "messing about" with the official list, we are all volunteers and we all find ways of working which suit us best. In some cases this may involve adding to or deleting from the list, bearing in mind that a lot of entries in the official version are non-deletable. Ian's reminder about volume number changes is timely and very relevant but surely TWYS rules OK! 3. In terms of timing, Ian sent a message at the same time as he updated the "master" version of the list in our code repository. Code doesn't instantly go live once it has been updated, rather it will usually go live immediately before the next database update starts, which means that there will often be a disjoint between the notification and the point where it goes live. Your points about people working as suits them best is taken, but equally we have to take account of the overwhelming majority of users who do not "tweak" WinBMD in any way. Making the update optional would generate significant calls for support from people who want to know whether they should accept the update. As things stand, there is a way in which those who want to override the updates can do so, and the program is written so as to allow those who wish to do so to customise the lists. The official position must, however, be "don't touch unless you understand what you are doing". -----Original Message----- From: freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of C&D Hughes Sent: 18 May 2011 13:53 To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com; Nick.Lord@t-online.de Subject: RE: District Pick List Sorry if I caused offence, but I don't accept all the comments.
