We have a real poser here: in scan 1953D1-M-0099 appears a handwritten addition with an insertion point between Marwood,Ralph B. and Marygold,Richard M. The record to be inserted reads: Mary B.,(Sister of Mercy),83,Bridge,5b,78 Clearly, this octogenarian nun has long since abandoned her surname so the Informant, perhaps the Mother Superior (and presumably the GRO), want to use her forename in lieu, and her Sisterhood in second place. TWYS and WinBMD seem to accept the input (with an out-of-sequence warning), though we have not yet tried uploading the file. The query here is whether a #COMMENT or #THEORY should be used to draw attention to the anomaly, given that our search is usually by surname. Well, perhaps the un-searchability of this individual doesn't matter; she will presumably have no descendants looking for her.... Richard Oliver Abingdon, Oxfordshire richol@arrakis.es
the nun may not have descendants but other members of the family might and perhaps would want to search for her ________________________________ From: Richard Oliver <r.oliver@arrakis.es> To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 17 July, 2011 12:16:41 Subject: Old dead nun.... I agree. I think it's #THEORY as you'll be transcribing the index as is. I think #COMMENT is mostly for where what you're transcribing differs with what's on the page. It doesn't automatically follow that she wouldn't have any descendants; she may well have become a nun later in life, after having children...
