One possibility: I found that when straightening and cropping scans, if I didn't leave enough white space at the bottom I had this same problem. Is there less white space at the bottom of these scans than you are used to? No. It doesn't happen with all scans from the same batch. Each looks the same as the rest. That's what so puzzling.
