Charles In my limited experience, and with great help from syndicate leader, I find we are encouraged to follow TWYS and not assume. I go back and re read sections of TKB frequently when unsure Kings L. is very likely Kings Lynn but has to remain Kings L. and you can probably add as a district to your picklist. They have a whole range of alternate spellings for each place so we continue as seen. So you seem to have it here with the use of ? and I do not think we need a theory as such For your own peace of mind you will find that entry on page 125 in Dec 44 is still as Kings L. but with volume and page then regards Colin ________________________________ From: Charles Bailey <charlesbailey23@comcast.net> To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 28 July, 2011 0:20:08 Subject: 1942B4-R-0111 I have a couple of questions about how to transcribe this image. Charles Rudd,David L.,Blaupapier,Northampton,3b,100 #COMMENT(2) entry reads Blaupapier or Blue for mother's name Rudd,David L.,Blue,Northampton,3b,100 is correct There is an insertion mark for the handwritten entry it is after the entry Royle, Antony J. For late entries the Vol No is sometime missing, where this occurs you enter a question mark to denote the missing entries. Please see Knowledge Base 6(q). For information a question mark ? is only used where it is unambiguous that there are no characters in the column, e.g a missing Volume. Please see http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml scroll down to "Uncertain character format". Very handily Rootsweb add this header line to this list's emails ... List-Id: <freebmd-admins.rootsweb.com> which makes life very simple. In my .mailfilter it hits the if (/^List-Id: <freebmd-admins.rootsweb.com>$/) { to "$DEFAULT/.Genealogy.FreeBMD_Admins/" } line and gets filtered to where I want on my home mailserver. Dennis, Is the "people" or "contains people" part of that option highlighted in blue? If it is, you should be able to click on it and it will open a new dialogue box where you can enter the FreeBMD information. I haven't tried this on Windows 7, but it works on Outlook Express. Hope this helps! Since changing computers and going from XP to 7, I have been searching for a way to divert incoming emails to the folders I carried over from Xp. I was pleased to see your suggestion, Jeff. I don't have a Tools button but if I click on Folders and Message Rules, I get a list of options. However, the nearest I have to your "Where the To line contains ......" is "Where the To line contains people". So I'm not sure how to direct mail to the freebmd folder. Jeff didn't suggest that there was anything in the subject line. The overwhelming majority of e-mail software in use today has the ability to filter on things other than the subject line. If you are using yahoo mail, then the following URL may help http://help.yahoo.com/tutorials/mmail/mmail/mm_filter1.html simply add freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com as "recipient contains" in a filter. -----Original Message----- From: freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of cb Sent: 25 July 2011 12:03 To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Filtering FreeBMD-admins mail Thank you to you too Jeff, I don't get anything in the subject line that identifies that is it is BMD :-( so cannot make a rule for it based on the subject line. Katherine, > Because I am not getting where it is from in the subject line, even after all the time I have been involved with Freebmd, I thought it was just spam. Setting up a filtering rule is very easy. For example in recent versions of MS Outlook, right-click the message and select <Create Rule>, alternatively you will see <Create Rule> as an icon at the top of the opened message. In either case, follow directions from thereon. If confused, press F1 for Help. Hope that helps Kind regards, William Stucke

Thank you William, My emails come through Yahoo only. I don't use MS Outlook. I can use the filtering on the Yahoo as I have done on different emails, but as these don't come with the words to identify where it is from, I don't understand how I can use a filter on it. These come in the Inbox with just " re: Old dead nun...." in the subject. (nothing else). Thanks for trying to help me though. Hi List, I upgraded to Lion last night and now find the same problem. I am able to keep contributing as I have plenty of work correcting submissions from lapsed members of my syndicate, however I will not be able to do any new transcribing until there is a new version of MacBMD made available. The majority of Mac transcribers will not have this 'pleasure' of correcting others files and may be lost to the Project. I very much doubt that any fix to the OS will surface and consequently I think it is essential that a new version of MacBMD is made available as soon as possible. I realise there will be no overnight solution to this as we need someone to volunteer but it would be great if we knew that something was underway. It is extremely unlikely that Apple will "fix" this. It has been known for months that support for PowerPC architecture applications would be dropped from Lion. It was in fact dropped from Snow Leopard's default install, though you could install Rosetta. You clearly have several options ... 1. revert to your back up (presumably Snow Leopard) 2. install Snow Leopard on a separate bootable drive or partition and choose which to boot up from. 3. install a virtualized Snow Leopard as a guest OS in a virtualization product (check your licence) 4. install DOS or Windows as a guest OS in a virtualization product and use SpeedBMD/WinBMD 5. install Ubuntu (for instance) as a guest OS in a virtualization product and use linBMD Anyway, you don't need MacBMD to transcribe. The submission format is CSV text, so any text processor application is adequate, just not as glitsy. I've just tried and linBMD works using VirtualBox running Fedora on my Mac. -----Original Message----- From: Rod Stott [mailto:rodandjostott@mac.com] Sent: 22 July 2011 08:43 To: Siddall Lisa Subject: MacBMD, problems with OS 10.7 "Lion" upgrade Hi Lisa, I have just upgraded my Apple iMac to the latest operating system, OS 10.7 "Lion" and found that the system will no longer run any of the older programs that used the original "PowerPC" processor of which MacBMD is one! It is early days yet and there may be a work around possible but from my correspondence with MacBMDs creator when I was looking into adding the Post 1946 registration codes I don't not hold out much hope. He didn't seem to want to revisit the software at all and that is what prompted me to devise a "work around" solution. So in the short term I would strongly advise any Mac users not to upgrade to OS 10.7 "Lion" until we have established if Apple are prepared to produce a fix to this new Operating System to allow the old programs to be used. The only other solution is to have a new version of the software produced that will run on the current Intel processors that the newer iMacs use. In my case I have another Apple computer I can use in the interim that has not been upgraded but other FreeBMD users may not be so fortunate! Please forward this to the FeeBMD website and any other Mac syndicates. Cheers Rod
