Thanks to all for there suggestions which I have passed on. Keith
Accessing "Define Save Path" doesn't solve the problem fully. Windows 7 decides to store the .BMD transcribed file as a "compatability file" so when you open the "Define(d) Save Path" folder you need to select the "Compatability Files" button and you should find your transcribed file there in "Output". Hope this helps. This is called progress!!! Further to my previous message I notice that the user "can't seem to find the transcribed file". I'm not sure where the default location is because I chose a different location for mine, but to find the location where WinBMD is putting them start WinBMD and select the file menu. The location is defined under "Define Save Path". Phil
The error message in step 2 arises when the user selects an image (jpg) file instead of a transcription (.BMD) file. She needs to choose the directory containing the transcriptions. Phil
Hello Further to my question before here is the message I received regarding BMDVERIFY. Step 1 seems OK Step 2. I get Suspect file C:\Users\Joan Cook\Pictures\FreeBMDscans\1959B1-D-0309 jpg Could not find any +INFO/S/F/M/B/U/PAGE header lines in the file Click OK to carry on CANCEL to quit. Pressed OK Went to Step 3, specified 2 columns then OK When check page comes up scan seems OK but checking line (ie imput line ) seems to be in code¹ instructions appear to be OK. Although it appears to reach end of input file immediately. I¹ve tried reloading WinBMD and BMDverify but that didn¹t seem to change anything. can¹t seem to locate the transcribed file. Thanks Keith
Yes, what he said. Except on a no name computer. Try it in compatibility mode? shouldn't be necessary but you never know. Hello, Has anyone had problems running BMDVERIFY with Windows 7. I have a transcriber who is having difficulties. Any information would be helpful. Thanks Keith
Hi Peter Unfortunately there is no BMD software that will run on the iPAD2, In fact the MACBMD software no longer runs on MACs with LION Installed. However, there are applications available for the iPADS which will allow you to create a comma delimited file for uploading to the BMD site. It will be a slow process but it can be done. I have WinBMD and BMDVerify installed on my recent vintage laptop, which also runs Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Instead of installing WinBMD under the default C:\Programs directory, I created my own directory, C:\WinBMD and installed it there. I installed the bmdverify.exe file to the same directory. I download image files to the C:\WinBMD\Images directory. I save transcription files in C:\WinBMD\Output. Everything works fine and I haven't had a bit of trouble. It seems that Windows 7 tries to do "smart", "helpful" things with the C:\Programs directory. For programs like WinBMD and BMDVerify, it is better to stay away from that directory and use your own, over which you have complete control. My main PC has died on me; pretty terminal. I only have a IPad 2 , left to possibly transcribe my images. What BMD software can I use please? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks Peter Fowler.
I disagree and think SENIOR,Roy,?,?,?,? is the correct solution. It is speculation that this entry is a repeat of the previous one. I think it is more likely that there _is_ an entry for SENIOR, Roy but because of the alias on the previous line the details got accidentally omitted, although admittedly one would expect the order to be reversed. The entry being returned as SENIOR,Roy,?,?,?,? would alert the a researcher of the anomaly and cause them to view the original. They would then be in a position to make a special request of the GRO for the certificate for the entry or pursue other avenues. Good one Mike. Having stared at the page for a while I think I too would be in a dilemma and would have requested advice/assistance/thoughts but probably transcribed as :- SENIOR,Roy H.C.,MAY,Bristol,7b,358 #COMMENT(2) Entry reads MAY or McCARTHY for Spouse. SENIOR,Roy H.C.,McCARTHY,Bristol,7b,358 SENIOR,Roy,McCARTHY,Bristol,7b,358 My logic would be if you leave a line of SENIOR,Roy,?,?,?,? Then anyone searching for this name under marriages for March 1959 would be returned the two complete entries and the '?'s one that could not lead them anywhere. Therefore in my view there is no point in entering the line with the 4 unknown fields. Can't think of a suitable #COMMENT to add after the SENIOR,Roy,McCARTHY,Bristol,7b,358 but feel as if there should be one. Alan - pleased you had this one first. -----Original Message----- From: freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:freebmd-admins-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Thomas Sent: 06 November 2011 10:41 To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com Subject: 1958M1-S-0180 Hi, I've had a query from a transcriber about the entry on this page for SENIOR, Roy H.C. which has alternative Spouse's surnames - something that's pretty common in these 1958 marriages. As is nearly always the case the alternative Spouse's surnames MAY or McCARTHY spread onto two lines. However, what's unusual about this entry is that the second line also has a double dash in the Surname column (repeating the surname SENIOR), and the word Roy in the Forename column. I've advised the transcriber to treat the entry for SENIOR, Roy H.C. in the normal way for entries with alternative Spouse's surnames, and then add another transcription line for SENIOR, Roy with all the other fields transcribed as question marks to show they're blank, like this: SENIOR,Roy H.C.,MAY,Bristol,7b,358 #COMMENT(2) Entry reads MAY or McCARTHY for Spouse's surname SENIOR,Roy H.C.,McCARTHY,Bristol,7b,358 SENIOR,Roy,?,?,?,? I know that doesn't absolutely adhere to TWYS, but it seems to me to be the best compromise taking into account what the original typist intended and trying to provide the most complete and accurate transcription for our end users. I have just upgraded my laptop to OSX Lion and MacBMD no longer works. From the error message given, it seems unlikely to me that there is a work-around. Mike Sharp
I think Evan made the right decision. I was aware of the scan when I posted my comment and in fact on a push thought the character in front of the 477/S was neither an S or a 5. Not quite correct. An important part of the query from Evan is missing from your copy of his email. Evan mentioned he had transcribed the entry as: Wilson,John,Salford,XX,[S5]477/S In other words he transcribed the page number as [S5]477/S since he couldn't make out the character in front of 477/S, which is a correct approach. Your suggestion means the file wont be able to be uploaded since the two lines Wilson,John,Salford,XX and Wilson,John,Salford,477/S only contains only four fields as opposed to the expected five fields as in Wilson,John,Salford,XX,[S5]477/S. XX is the Volume Number whereas [S5]477/S is the associated page number.
