Ted 1. A similar query was asked way back in 2008 regarding the acceptable formats. The answer at that time is shown in: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/freebmd-syndicates/2008-09/1221860453 2. #THEORY(2),REF,SEE D/64 must be the correct answer based on http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml which states "Note that the #THEORY(N) is put after the first record but N is the total number of records including the first". FreeBMD has a District Alias Team who "map" non standard spellings and uncertain entries to the Official District list. For minor district mis-spellings there is no need to add a THEORY line. I understand that there is a database of accepted mis-spellings. I certainly never use a theory line in this sort of instance. For your other query you do not need to add the comment line - treat them as 2 separate entries. Note that they are not identical - the handwritten one has the spouse's name spelled differently. Phil

I am currently transcribing 1938 M Q4 G-O ANC-05 page 391. One entry reads Nash Eva E. Bennett Emonton,3a 2231. I haven't found a registration district called Emonton and suspect this should read Edmonton. At present I have entered one line following the TWYS rule, but have added a Theory line saying 'District name should probably read Edmonton not Emonton' followed by the same entry but with Edmonton in the District column. (The entry for the spouse, Archie Bennett, gives Edmonton, by the way.) At the bottom of the same page is a hand-written entry, which gives exactly the same information as the typed version (Nash Winifred I......etc.) except for the volume number. In this instance, I have entered both versions, with a Comment in between saying, 'Hand-written entry at bottom of the page has 1538A as the page number.' Can you please tell me if this is the right protocol? Thank you. Pam

Bob, The rule that the page in the filename must correspond to the +PAGE was introduced at the end of 2004. I can (as mentioned in the syndicates list) do a bulk rename of files if you let me know (off list) your requirements. Hello Using Bulk Upload I am replacing files and having some rejected. The message given is Page number 1836 from +PAGE does not correspond to page 836 in filename The file name is an 8 character style file name limited to a 3 digit file number while the scan number is 4 digits The replacement file has the same filename and +PAGE numbers as the original and that was accepted but the new file isn't being accepted. I'd think an exception should be made if this is a new rule that the filename number has to be the same as the +PAGE number. I did want to replace all the 8 character file names with 11 character file names but changed my mind after it was said that deleting the 8 and replacing with an 11 would lose any database links so any changes from 8 to 11 I will have to do slowly and painfully in File Management. Now this extra burden has cropped up that means I have to retrograde files (reduce 4 digit page numbers to 3) before I reinstate them to 4 when I change to 11. I have uploaded something like 500 upgraded files in a couple of weeks so I do not want to be slowed down by messing about in File Management or fiddling with files. cheers Bob Phillips
Alan, Peter, Dave, and particularly Jeff----Thank you for you varied advice. With lots of trials and filtering ideas, I think I have it beat. I gave a summary of my solution to Derek Lowe, which follows below. Cheers John >>Thanks Derek, I had forgotten about TBK and Jeff Coleman got to me before you with a copy of #3(f). This was helpful but it was more like getting advice on how to boil an egg rather than what I wanted which was how to fry it! Never the less it got my thought processes going and I seem to have a solution which allows me to have WinBMD.exe reside in in Program Files along with all other program files and all data in a sub-directory of My Documents , where in a rebuild it cannot be scrambled( & no virtual files). The problem seems to be that when in FreeBMD I try to browse and select my normal place to save (Viz ...\My Documents\FreeBMD and save, it just would not save and would keep reverting to the default ( .\Output ). Then I noticed it had a box for New Folder so I did that and changed New Folder to FreeBMD2 so now the save path is ..\My Documents\FreeBMD\FreeBMD2. This seem to be working just fine, but I will not be really happy until my smile lasts another month. I have managed to find all lost files, hidden files, read only files etc. and put them all in my data Directory. That all said your idea of reinstalling in C:\ and saving in My Docs or such would have been ok too, as I already do this with another rogue program. I was just about ready to try when I stumbled on to above solution. Cheers John <<
The update to WinBMD which is currently being validated will provide exactly the feature you are looking for. I always save to a SD card for portability between computers. No problems so far. Regards, Dave
Hi, John, I am probably (a) teaching Grandma to suck eggs and (b) treading on lots of peoples' toes, but are you aware of the third option in the FILE menu in WINBMD v. 6 - Define save path? This enables you to save to any location, reliably. Incidentally, I ALWAYS save my data on a USB memory stick, regardless of the program in use - safer if your hard drive fails! Regards Peter

Hello all, On the page I am presently transcribing (1958 Marriages) I have come across a couple of forenames that I've never seen before: Metalyn and Trinkle. This makes me wonder, is FreeBMD making any kind of "oddities collection"? A nice Wednesday evening to everyone! Howard Shelton (amont47)
If there is a surname there is bound to be a forename! http://genforum.genealogy.com/trinkle/ http://www.metalyn.nl/
