Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make difficult scans more easily read? My present allocations are 1869d1 184 to 198 and not the clearest, It is especially difficult to read some of the surnames and page numbers. I am using InfranView to manipulate the colours but still find it difficult. Does anyone have any tweaks that may be helpful? Leonard Mackrill Scan2 syndicate
I had to reinstall my computer's operating system and all the programs so I had to re-download WinBMD.. After I downloaded WinBMD, I noticed that, unlike before, the little blue/green window for data entry does not line up correctly. It is my recollection that in the past, there either was no blue-green window or it lined up exactly with the row in which the entry belonged. Now, I find that the data entry window appears approximately one whole row below the place where the data actually belongs, so that when I type, I can observe the letters appearing in two places - in the data entry window where I am typing and in the row above. This is confusing, and it causes me to lose my place when I am making vertical entries. Can you understand what I am trying to say? I uninstalled and reinstalled WinBMD but the same problem is there. Any suggestions? Barbara Rodgers
Does anyone else have a problem with BMD verify when doing corrections. What do I do wrong when it suddenly closes down and I lose what I have done. I have taken to using save batch after every few items as if not you lose all corrections except that a blank line will have been left where a complete entry was missed.
Scan 1853 Q1 page 0641 Deaths Really bad scan to read with lots of *'s But error, on upload, was quote "syntax error" Invalid UCF characters in district, at line 27 Line 27 was error free ... it was line 23 with the problem. Tho' the page number in line 27 was also 27. Just for the record .. no reply needed. Robb

BMDIndex are a subsidiary of S&N Genealogy. They bought their own stock of microfilm source from the GRO and scanned it themselves. They have a page index, rather than an individual names index like FreeBMD, except for data post 1983 which were bought as datafiles rather than image. There will be differences in the content and quality of individual scans because the two organisations use different source material. You pay your money (or not) and take your choice. > > >>Q: Is there a difference in the content or quality of FreeBMD, and >>BMDindex.co.uk ? >> >> > >No idea, I've never used it! > > > >>Q: How is it that BMDindex guys got hold of an electronic version ready made >>? >> >> > >They didn't. > > >

Currently we have ten Syndicates accepting volunteers and every day we take on new volunteers. You may wish to have a further attempt at one of these via http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/list-synd.pl?reader=0 Your experience may be the exception to the service we try to provide new volunteers. If you experience any problems at joining another Syndicate then an email to vol-coord@freebmd.rootsweb.com will produce a response. Can let me know off list which Syndicate you offered your service and I'll try and establish the reason for them not getting back to you?. Hi Alan I'd be interested in any data on missing scans in 1846 Dec Births. I've done an analysis on missing scans and in that quarter I have found only one. The missing index page is between 1846B4-A-G-1144 and 1846B4-A-G-1145 The index page will probably contain Foulkes and Fountain surnames. The page will be uploaded when I can get photographed. cheers Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: "Allan Raymond" <allan_raymond@btinternet.com> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 2:22 PM Subject: Re: {not a subscriber} Births register images > Paul > > There are two options available regarding transcribing for FreeBMD. > > The first is to join one of our Syndicates which normally would mean you > wouldn't necessarily be transcribing the index which had a particular > interest to you. > > The other alternative is to work on your own and transcribe index pages > which are of relevance to you. Your comments are extremely unhelpful. On our various Web Pages particularly those about joining Syndicates and the like are two email addresses should volunteers encounter difficulties. One being vol-coord@freebmd.rootsweb.com and the other synd-coord@freebmd.rootsweb.com an email from you to either of these addresses would have received a human response from one of those "faceless" people. Even if you had posted your comments to FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com along the lines "I'm having difficulty in joining a Syndicate can somebody help?" would have produced a very quick response from one of those non-faceless Co-ordinators willing to take on a volunteer in distress. Paul There are two options available regarding transcribing for FreeBMD. The first is to join one of our Syndicates which normally would mean you wouldn't necessarily be transcribing the index which had a particular interest to you. The other alternative is to work on your own and transcribe index pages which are of relevance to you. We have two individuals Peter Abbot and Peter Hendy-Ibbs who may be able with this type of transcription. Further details can be found on our "Join FreeBMD" page at: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Signup.html I'm not aware we have only scanned alternative pages of the 1846 Dec Births. Hello Lilian The line 2 incomplete message when transcribing deaths, can be solved in WinBMD by clicking on Options and go down to the 5th choice which should be 'Ignore Age at Death' and click on it. Then save your work, and as long as there are no other errors, the file should upload without any problems.
