Hi Rob I think what you need are the page ranges on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/district-page-reverse-map-index.html . There seems to be a good list for March quarter 1853 deaths on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/district-page-map.pl?file=10/1853D1.csv You can save the web page to your computer and then open with Excel, or copy and paste. The sequence of districts will probably be the same in other quarters, though actual page ranges will differ. March quarter deaths seem usually to be highest, followed by December. Some small districts do not turn up in these lists unless the transcription is virtually complete. Hope this helps Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robb" <rob_roy@paradise.net.nz> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2005 7:12 AM Subject: Is there a file to printout for "sorted by District code" ? > I'm finishing off a quarter for WebScan .. > > Lots of odd pages for Deaths Mar 1853, mixture of letters, > and some poor scans. > > For some help .... > I have used Excel to list the Districts into 3 or 4 columns > making a handy alpha 3 page printout. Well I've just tried (approx 2pm Thursday UK time) downloading and installing from the site and I can find nothing wrong. From time to time I post out the following reminder, which is especially directed at the the large number of new volunteers. We have two very useful documents on the FreeBMD site, viz. "Hints and Help For Beginners" & "Transcribers' Knowledge Base". Hints and Help For Beginners is the starting point for our new and existing volunteers and if this fails to answer your question then a quick look through our Transcribers' Knowledge Base provides answers to a multitude of queries posed by volunteers. Both documents are are the definitive source of information for the FreeBMD Project. Both of these documents are available via the FreeBMD homepage at : http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and then clicking "Transcribers' Page". Or they can be found as follows, Hints and Help For Beginners at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/beginhelp.shtml and Transcribers' Knowledge Base at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html Regards Allan Raymond FreeBMD Co-ordinator Syndicate
Transcribe it exactly as shown. Please see our Hints and Help For Beginners guide at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/beginhelp.shtml ? Scroll down to "Transcribing District Names". In fact, that's twice in a single day that a query specific to the scan2 syndicate has found its way here! Hello I don't quite understand the first question, so I won't reply. My I can answer the second one. Transcriptions appear on the internet when the database is uploaded. The admins seem to do this about once a month (correct me if wrong!) so It could take up to a month to be available, depending on when you submit your work. Whatever the case, they are uploaded relatively quickly, and appear... The other day I found my first transcriptions online :) It was really satisfiying! Hope you get an answer to your other queries. Steve Re: "Do we have to do anything with the initial 'U' in the last column of our transcription history etc. Some entries have entries showing as FIX whilst some show TYP and the number of 'unreadable bits'? These queries are Syndicate specific to Scan2 and you will need to ask Derek off list. Syndicate specific queries posted to the Admins list leads to confusion for members of other Syndicates. Re: "how long after uploading our transcriptions is it before they appear on the FreeBMD page on the Internet?" It takes from about 1 day to 1 month before transcriptions appear for searching. The database is updated at approximately monthly intervals and records appear after the update. Further information is at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#10d . The rest of Rodney Hall's site is still working, and the introduction to WinBMD from that site is still there on http://rmhh.co.uk/freebmd.html . It may well be that the page will re-appear soon, maybe with a revised version. If in urgent need of WinBMD, Chris has put a copy of the download for WinBMDfull on http://www.pingramsyndicate.org/ but that site has intermittent difficulties and I can't get at it at the moment. That version is a large file (4.3Mb) so slow to download. Contact me off-list if you want it urgently. Hi Wanda, It looks like a flourish on the cross of the A to me, so the name should be transcribed as "Annie". And twins could be registered on separate pages - they may not have died at exactly the same time. I had twin siblings who died a day apart, and their entries aren't even in the same district! At the bottom of the middle column, there is a handwritten entry & it's clear where to insert it. I have transcribed it: OXBY, SAnnie Chester le S.,10a 362a. The only way I could figure out the district was because of the entry before. There seems to be an obvious S in front of Annie, so I transcribed it thus. That puts me out of sequence (hate when that happens!). Does anyone know what that could be besides an "S"? I thought that the first Annie entry (aged 25) might be a mother who died in childbirth with twins, but would the death of twins be registered on two different, widely spaced pages? To add a little humour to the monotony of transcribing, I give you these entries from my transcriptions of marriages in the 1840s. EATWELL - John - registration district - HUNGERFORD OVEN - John " " - BAKEWELL CHERRY - Belly - handwritten entry. Later corrected to Betty. EDEVEAN - Putty - handwritten entry. Later corrected to Patty. And the almost unbelievable - PLANT - Lettice - registration district - LEEK! Did her parents know of the vegetable "lettuce"? Fortunately for Lettice, marriage saved her from going through life as a Lettice Plant. Evan Smith
