Very few of our records are actually transcribed by people who have any interest in them. Those that are tend to provide us with the data once, and are never heard of again. 3. Hi I have come across a handwritten entry at the bottom of a column. For the district it says 'Birmingham' but no volume no. In one of the help sections on WinBMD it says to put the district in and a question mark for volume but WinBMD keeps coming up with an error box when I do this. It says if you use a question mark it should be the only hing that appears in the column. So should I be putting 'Birmingham,?' or just '?' In the page column I am putting 'see s/30' Thanks Karen

    3. The page I am about to finish I realise that I haven't been exactly 'type what you see'. The district numbers are in capitals, i.e. 8A instead of 8a, 11E instead of 11e etc. My two questions are: Do I go back and follow the rules and, if I hadn't picked this up would it have been accepted?

    1. Is there a file to printout and more
    2. Phil Scott
    3. As a fairly new transcriber, I too had "problems" with Districts, not least that in 1903 (part of my patch) many the districts had different names from those in WinBMD and of course, being an innocent, I dropped straight in taking WinBMD as gospel and forgetting "TWYS". I got over this and added the new district but was left with the old ones as well which could not be deleted. In exploring the files which are downloaded with WinBMD I discovered a couple files which I was able to reuse. WinBMD_A_Districts.txt gives a list of Districts as they are. Any updating I have done whilst transcribing is stored in a different file, WinBMD_Supp_Districts.txt. It is these later districts that can be edited or deleted when using WinBMD (they are marked with an * ). Open WinBMD_A_Districts.txt, select all and cut makes this file an empty file when saved. Opening WinBMD_Supp_Districts.txt and pasting enters all those districts into this file. A consequence is that all the districts are now marked with an * and can be edited or deleted. Now when I use WinBMD not only can I add a new district as it is typed, I can delete the original version so that the district list does not have "duplicates". Makes entry much easier and means my pick-list is tailored to the period I am transcribing. If at a later date I end up transcribing in a totally different period with different names for the district then i will redo the list so that is reflects the period. Going back to the original question about sorting the district list, I then opened my Supp District list using Excel using delimited and the , (comma) which produces a two column spreadsheet with district in the first column and the code in the second. Hope that helps. If I have inadvertently made a terrible booboo, would someone please tell me. Phil

    3. Hi A bit late but nevertheless a useful tip given to me by Ian, one of the FreeBMD boffins In WinBMD, in the district field on the input grid, type ",1a" (that's comma 1a without the quotes, the comma must be the first character in the box) and it will list in the picklist all the 1a districts. You may need to increase the number of rows shown in the picklist to see them all. 3. Thanks to all who have responded .. To print WinBMD_A_Districts (original file) you get below .... Aberayron,11b Abergavenny,11a Aberystwyth,11b Abingdon,2c Alcester,6d Alderbury,5a Alnwick,10b Alresford,2c Alston,10b What I would like is ... Districts listed ... in order .. a1, a2, a3, through 11a, 11b etc .. (also alpha). Some times the district vol (3a or what ever, is clear) but with a printout .. things become clearer. Hand writing varies so much, and knowing the options (of area) deciphers the writing. W & M's can look alike, for example, and possiblities on hand can speed thigs up. And yes I do know the "edit districts/view option is built in to WINBMD. 3. G'Day Rob I have had similar ideas and set up an Access database with the Districts and Volumes. This has allowed me to query the database for all districts with a certain Volume (eg 11b) which has helped me to "see" the handwriting more clearly (when I knew roughly what the possibilities might be). I still TWYS but with much more confidence! 3. Although the webserver at that site isn't delivering pages properly, it looks like http://winbmd.rmhh.co.uk/install/WinBMD_Install.exe delivers the installation exe file OK The gist of the rest of the page is a very small program is downloaded to your computer (WinBMD_Install.exe). After this is downloaded, double click on this file and it will first check your computer to see which files you need and only downloads the missing/updated ones. This still results in a fair size download (because the WinBMD program and its Help files are quite big) but in future it will hopefully drastically reduce the download sizes. During installation, ensure that the Destination Folder shown is correct - usually C:\Program Files\WinBMD\ . If it is not, then browse to the correct folder before allowing the install to proceed. After WinBMD is installed you will find a new item on your Windows Start menu under the WinBMD group called "Update WinBMD" - you can run this as often as you want and it will check the website and tell you if there is a new version available. A similar item is added to your Startup group which will check automatically every 2 months. Use Excel to open the WinBMD_A_Districts file, selecting "delimited" and comma as delimiter. This will load the file into Excel with districts in column A and Volumes in column B. Then sort the Excel file on column B, and you will have a list of Districts in volume order. -- Dave Mayall ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net

    3. Yesterday I flagged a problem with the link to WinBMD <http://winbmd.rmhh.co.uk/> as it was going to a domain holding page. I tried again today and IE warned me that an attempt was being made to download a file to my computer - which I naturally declined! Has anyone been able to contact Rodney Hall about this? Graham
