    3. Are your +PAGE's in numerical sequence within the file? Also is our Hints and Help For Beginners at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/beginhelp.shtml of any help? Scroll down to Instructions for the use of +PAGE,n. Alternatively if you can quote the scan you are transcribing it should be possible to advise the correct +PAGEs. Since receiving your e-mail I have had a further attempt at obtaining a screen-image of the scanned sheets in question. I didn't have much success at first but I found that if I waited long enough after the 'Done' flag appeared.lo and behold, the image was duly displayed. Perhaps the fault is in the slowness of my computer although the Marriages section is infinitely quicker. However, at the moment the matter appears to have been resolved. I hope I did not put you to too much inconvenience and thank you again for your help. Regards Ron Mann

The corrections page shows the file name, because this *often* gives a clue as to which page the transcription is taken from. It doesn't always do so (which is why it says "may") In this case, the file name doesn't give any clue. This usually means that the record was transcribed direct from fiche rather than from a scanned image. In such cases we may or may not have a copy of the page available on-line. You need to go to; http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl and browse for the image. If the image isn't there, we can give no indication of when it might become available. -- Dave Mayall

Warnings are just that, warnings. They don't indicate an error which must be fixed, just an unusual case which should be double checked. Under no circumstances should transcribers alter transcriptions with the sole aim of eliminating warnings. -- Dave Mayall ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net

    3. Whilst checking my file management I see that one file contains a warning. On the scan I was transcribing the page number was given as 819 followed by what appears to be (97). The program wouldn't allow me to type in brackets so I entered it as 819 _97_. Advice please so I can correct this and know for future reference.

Given that many people have a reluctance to "play" with an otherwise functional PC, most ISP's are only too willing to provide phone assistance. If this one doesn't, or wants to charge for the service, switch to another. Ron Sullivan

Alnsley is not a surname that appears in the database whereas Ainsley is relatively common, but with forenames you never can tell. If you're not sure you CAN have it both ways. Transcribe it as A[il]nsley - WinBMD may still complain it's out of sequence, but don't worry about that. Someone will then be able to find it under either spelling. Chris

    3. I am transcribing 1845 Marriages, June Quarter from handwritten scan 1845M2-A-0002.jpg On a number of different lines there is a strange character (or characters, I don't know how many), which appears after the District name and before the Volume Number. I have read in the Transcribers' Knowledge Base that the characters "&c" often appears after a District , meaning "and etcetera" and that this should be transcribed. Because I cannot be sure what these particular characters are my instinct is to type an asterisk, for example, Able Elizabeth, Hereford *,XXVI However, I suspect that this situation will be repeated in many more scans in this series so I wonder if anyone could please confirm whether the character(s) is, in fact, "&c". Some ISP's only allow small uploads or downloads of about this size. It may also depend on the speed of their modem if they have one and may receive a server timeout error. If they have broadband then there should be no problem other than the file size. I think Wannadoo has a restriction of about 1MB. 3. Yes, it's possible. I haven't had that happen often. Usually it's been my error. If I am positive it's not, I have to leave it as is. If there is the slightest doubt on my part, I substitute a "_" for the offending letter. If it happens early on in a transcription, I change it to fit so the program can pick up other errors I may have made, then change it back before I upload.
