For what it's worth, I'd like to correct one of the entries for my family due to an indistinct entry on a film but, having attempted to follow the above route, the only Info button I can see (beside the "England and Wales, Civil Registration...' link on the search.Ancestry.com page that one is redirected to) just goes to a description of the index. I don't know whether that's because I'm already registered with Ancestry.com? I can find no trace of any route to report incorrect entries. Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)
After looking at all the comments that this message began - Dan quoted the district as 8e yet everyone seems to say on the image it is 6e. Looking at the rest of the specified page image ... most of the 1's seem to bend slightly to the right, a few are straight. This character seems to bend to the left. Having said that, the other 0's clearly have a white gap in the middle, and this one doesn't. So my response to the GRO would be to try again with "405" rather than "415" and see if that brings results. The rest of the line is so clear and unambiguous that they can't just not find it. If you go to http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and choose the 'View Images Route and choose Births, 1853, June quarter, starting with G, then 1853B2-G-1410 you will see the original from which the transcription was made. The entry is about four lines up from the bottom. You will see that the number looks very very much like 415. If you look further up the page you will see that the original writer writes his zeroes on a slant, and quite narrow, so there is a possibility the number might have been 405. But I suggest that the vast majority of people looking at that image would see 415. If you search for Mary Ann GREEN, born Preston in June quarter 1853, you will get these two paragraphs. "Whilst FreeBMD makes every effort to ensure accurate transcription, errors exist in both the original index and the transcription. You are advised to verify the reference given from a copy of the index before ordering a certificate. " "If you are SURE that our transcription(s) below differs from the GRO index, you can submit a correction request by clicking on the Info button to the right of the entry in question." If after looking at the image you are sure that a correction is required, then by all means follow that procedure. If you have difficulty finding the image I can email you a copy off-list. It is about 600kb in size. To find the route for correction of errors, click the info button to the right of your search result. You will then find, in addition to the transcriber information, the line; If you have a correction to this entry click here; If you click "here" you will find details of the circumstances in which a correction to a transcription can be made, and the form on which to do it. Fran Sarnia, ON, Canada> Hi Fran I have put my image into Paintshop Pro 7 and the 'surname' looks like 'Uknown' - the previous page 1869d4-343 is also listed on the 3rd column as 'Unknown'. To volunteer transcribers A further reminder. We would like to give advance warning regarding a slight modification to the process to access scans on FreeBMD. It is now possible for transcribers to access the scans at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/scan-source2.shtml (or http://images.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/ ) by using the same SubmitterID and Password as that used to Upload files to FreeBMD. The previous scheme of using a different ID and password for access to scans has been superseded and will be withdrawn by the end of April 2005. For the time being access will also be permitted using the existing common userid and password. However it is highly recommended that transcribers start using their SubmitterID and Password to access the scans to ensure an orderly changeover of ID and Password. Regards Allan Raymond
My answer was sent to the list and is showing here, so you should have seen it. Anyhow, looking at the previous image, all the entries for 'Unknown' come after the end of the A-Z surnames, so you just use 'Unknown' as the surname and 'Male' or 'Female' as the Christian name entry. > so what was the answer? - in case others of us come across the same > problem!! > ----- Original Message ----- > From: John K.Eason > To: FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 10:10 PM > Subject: Re: Can't read surname > > > Thanks John; > > > > Fran > > Sarnia, ON, Canada > > No problem. > Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)

The formats which can be used are shown in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/Format.shtml , unless I'm mistaken +BLANK isn't one of the recognised formats hence why the system didn't understand +BLANK. I have just realised that I have not been including in the file name of the files I have uploaded (1906 Deaths) the letter indicating the name range included in the data (e.g. '1906D40006.BMD' instead of '1906D4A0006.BMD'). Is this likely to cause any problems?
