Thanks everyone who helped -problem solved - onwards and upwards as they say
As I was reading the letters on this subject I wondered how this would affect anybody searching for that name. The name to search for would be entered as "Mary Ann", not "Mary, Ann". How would the searcher be able to find the name he/she is looking for? Anthony Hood
Dear Sirs Sometimes the page on screen can be very black. I have a good tip for this. I have found that going into print properties and changing the printer to economy print and printing the page out eliminates nearly all the black and makes it possible to transcribe much more. than can be seen on the screen. Your sincerely Hazel Hiscock MIRLIN
Just picked up on your question about inserting comas within christian names. You will have to edit the file with notepad and place quotation marks around the whole christian name, this will tell the program that the comma is not a field seperator. i.e. "Mary, Ann" will show up in Winbmd as Mary,Ann and will be accpted by the database. Personally, I would ignore (omit) them, but someone will no doubt shout at me now and tell us the proper (technical) answer! best of luck Angie I transcribe for FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ Visit my eBay store: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/natures-magical-gifts -----Original Message----- From: Susan Howell [mailto:susan@njhowell.co.uk] Sent: 18 April 2005 21:07 To: FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com Subject: commas I am transcribing 1847 handwritten scans and I have christian names Mary, Ann, Blackett - the commas are definate after Mary and Ann but WinBMD will not allow me to enter them. That's true. It would be good if Ancestry could at least put a page up detailing how to report errors, even if they can't introduce direct links. Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)
