I am transcribing Scan 1843M4-M-1226.jpg (Right Hand Page) and about ten of the entries are obscured (possibly by an ink spill). Should I make some comment on my transcription or just complete as much as possible? Eric

I have just noticed that there are 4 files in red on my management file telling me these have not been uploaded to FreeBMD. They are 1846d3173 and 174, 1848d1008 and 1880d4049. When I tried to re-upload them I got 'Invalid File' on the screen. I have checked the files and headers but can't see what is wrong. I was able to re-send 1880d4049 but not the others. To volunteer transcribers This is the final reminder regarding a modification to the process to access scans on FreeBMD. Access to the scans at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/scan-source2.shtml (or http://images.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/ ) is by using the same SubmitterID and Password as that used to Upload files to FreeBMD. The previous scheme of using a different ID and password for access to scans has been superseded and will be withdrawn on 1 May 2005. An underscore indicates a character that is unreadable. Characters enclosed in square brackets represent a single character that is one of the enclosed characters. B_[ce]ulford means a "b" followed by a character (unreadable) followed by a character that is a "c" or a "e", followed by "ulford". _{n,m} is a n to m instances of unreadable characters. The underscore can be used on its own as indicated above. It *could* mean exactly the same thing. It could mean (for example) that there is a single missing letter which is either "c" or "e". The problem is that by not using the proper uncertain character format, the transcriber has left us uncertain as to what is meant. B_[c_]ulford would be a perfectly valid transcription. It says that the second missing letter might be a "c", but the transcriber isn't certain. -- Dave Mayall
