Hi John I have just tried to access them and have also been denied. You are not alone!! John
> Is any one else having a problem accessing scans today? I have used my > own password and ID as well as one other that I know and have been > denied access using both. > > Perplexed in Cumbria Yes. Same applies here. Luckily I picked up a batch of four pages last evening. Maybe something to do with the current upgrade work on the server? See the FreeBMD home page. I got a message warning about possible problems when uploading last night too, although the transcribed file did upload ok. Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)
Is any one else having a problem accessing scans today? I have used my own password and ID as well as one other that I know and have been denied access using both. Perplexed in Cumbria John
There are errors in the scan naming of some scans in 1841B3 They are 1.. 1841B3-R-0514-front.tif to 1841B3-R-0609-front.tif 2.. 1841B3-T-0971-front.tif to 1841B3-T-1079-front.tif They all contain data and are in the correct alphabetical order, the error appears to be that the word "front" has crept into the naming process and shouldn't be there. They are being transcribed and the word front is being ignored. John
I have been told that "Ignore age at death" is an Option in WinBMD but I can't find it. Am I looking in the wrong place or does it mean that I need to download a more recent version of WinBMD (with all the perils that often seem to go with updating software) than the one which I am using which was downloaded January 2002. There was an error like this when a search was saved at the time a new database was bought online. However, this should have been corrected. If you send me the saved search I will investigate. I have got round the problem below by going back to any earlier set of ss files for the ones that failed. As the ss files look like binary, I can't tell if they were corrupted by me or you. Janet Masters (user jam) -------- Original Message -------- From: Janet Masters <ja.masters@virgin.net> Subject: Is there something wrong with W? To: FreeBMD-Admins-l@rootsweb.com Hi, I have a few saved searches that I run updates on each time your database is updated. This time I notice that the ones that are district Weymouth are returning me Wharfedale and the Witham one is returning Wolstanton. Has someone done something to the order of the W districts? Keith These sort of queries are best dealt with by sending to "Syndicate Coordinator" at email synd-coord@freebmd.rootsweb.com as per Web Page "Transcribing Scanned Source" at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/scan-source2.shtml . It's scans 1861M4-C-0120.jpg to 1861M4-C-0348.jpg which need to have the alpha letter changed from letter C to B. I'll action your request, the scans will be renamed ASAP. Hi to all List Members As I have recently joined the list, a few words to explain who I am and where I've come from. I guess it's a common route. I decided to explore my family tree. Having never done anything like this in the past, it was a bit of a learning curve. trying to decide what information I wanted and where to get it from. One of the sites I looked at was FreeBMD, and thought what a brilliant idea it was. I was staggered by the foresight of the original developer, and also that they were not put off by the scale of the undertaking. Having used the site on a few occasions, I noticed that transcribers were always needed. So wanting to help in the only way I could, I joined 'Christines Crew' and am now going through another learning curve, learning how to enter data from a scanned record. I am based in the UK, living in a small village in Wales. I am looking forward to reading, and contributing, to the postings on this list. Best wishes, John :-)

As Jeff said earlier, this is not an appropriate subject for FreeBMD-Admins-L, which is exclusively for transcription queries, and there must be no further discussion of this subject on this list. Discussion of the subject would be appropriate on FreeBMD-Discuss-L, however attempts to raise a petition or conduct an e-mail campaign via any FreeBMD mailing list will not be permitted. For the record, this story relates to recent BMD records, not to the records of greatest historical significance. Whilst FreeBMD would be interested in the digitisation of older records, this work lies outside our remit. -- Dave Mayall ---------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://www.ukonline.net
Your heritage is being crushed now by Tony Blair's god and master the EEC. Why not start at home first, and worry about India and Sri Lanka later. (Yes, I know, Dave - this subject is not for this list. I will not comment further). FreeBMD and its related projects FreeCen and FreeReg work on transcribing data which, though subject to copyright, is already in the public domain. The material which the ONS is now proposing to transcribe is not. I find it absolutely extraordinary that anyone could get upset about the security issues involved in outsourcing this project to India but then suggest that as an alternative the potentially sensitive data is handed over to completely unregulated volunteers all over the globe, working, completely unsupervised, in their own homes! This list has the specific purpose of dealing with queries about transcribing we do as FreeBMD volunteers. Any possible transcription by any other organisation, if discussed at all, should be on the FreeBMD-DISCUSS list, not on this list. Anything that might be construed as political is out of bounds for all FreeBMD lists. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/lists.html Jeff
I'm guessing, but what I think it is about is the fact the General Register Office is going to put Births Marriages and Deaths Online in about 5 years and is getting cheap labour in India to do the job. God knows what the result will be! But I'm guessing again that there will be more mistakes on their database than we have on Free BMD. Also theirs will not be free as we have all found out from the 1901 Census! The idea is that you will be able to buy certificates Online instead of ordering them though either the General Register Office or Local Registry Offices.
