It does help to find the problem if specific information is provided. Which entries have gone missing? Details of the event/year and quarter along with some examples of the entries would help to narrow it down. I assume the problem is limited to your search activities rather than files you have uploaded to FreeBMD? I am a bit slow in catching up with the digest of e-mails so have only just come across 131 where someone asked if there was a volunteer transcriber with access to a digital camera who goes into the Family Record Centre from time to time. I am one who fits this description [was in London last week and checked some of my own transcriptions from dodgy scans back to the originals]. I took with me a printout of my draft transcription, but not the camera. Not sure that this would be acceptable in terms of copyright and the rule that FreeBMD works under. Any thoughts? [NB I don't go in very frequently and would not like to disappoint if I became inundated with requests for direct access to the Indices!] John Anderson - Essex
My suggestion is that you use WinBMD instead of the older program SpeedBMD. It is rather easier to use, is designed for use with Windows, and if you happen to be in a syndicate that wants SpeedBMD format in transcriptions, you can set 'SpeedBMD Format' in the 'Options' menu in WinBMD. Forgot to mention, if the volunteer is not able to even pass the first stage of registration then their email address is useful to enable direct contact to be made with the intended volunteer (this detail to be sent via vol-coord@freebmd.rootsweb.com ). Greetings. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6q explains what it means. Yes type what you see, do not correct the District number - but you don't have to add Oxford, 6b to your district list - it's not likely you will need it again! You do not need to remark it is a handwritten entry, but if you do comment, the correct place to put it is in the line below: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6z gives an example and shows you the format to use. I have a handwritten entry as follows: HINGE Charles H. Oxford 6b See S/50 Oxford 6b should be 3a and See S/50 as the page number I have TWYS but I have to add Oxford 6b to the district list which is clearly wrong and what does See S/50 mean. I have added a note in the forename column to say it is a handwritten entry. Am I doing right and should I correct the wrong district number or has the person who wrote the handwritten entry got the wrong district? I have had the same with other names that begin with Z. To get round it I entered the name without the Z, uploaded it and then edited the Z back in. Anyone got a better idea? I've had the same problem a few times, and always with forenames starting with 'Z'. My solution has been to use any other character, then edit the finished file with Notepad. Hi, I am having no luck in getting the program working. I have Windows xp pro installed andI get the message "Windows\system32\autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications" Can you please advise. eric phillips
This was a bug in version 4 WinBMD. It happens when the number of entries in the name file exactly divide into the internal space that the program reserves for them and then a new name is added. To get over it open the name file (which can be found in the FILES folder below WinBMD - the file is called WinBMD_Name2.txt) using Notepad, scrolldown to the end of the file and insert a new entry (for example "Zzzzzzzz"), Save the file and restart WinBMD.
