I've attempted to read the scan for marriages, Sept Quarter 1837, page 026.....impossible. If the original is as bad as the scan I've downloaded (3 different ways), could someone take a look at an/the original and at least tell me what the first and last names on the page are? At least I can eliminate it, and narrow the odds of finding an elusive ancestor (Mary Ann Bennett). Thanks.
Greetings. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml Have a look at that URL for details of how to submit data that isn't in full page blocks, which is exactly what you are offering to provide. Hi I have asked my syndicate organiser this and he said to try you, so here goes. I have quite a few names and numbers from the Indexes, researched from microfiche at both my Local Studies here in Derby, and from the Indexes at the FRO on Myddelton St in London. They are quite recent, eg., 1920 - 1993. It seems a shame to waste them - we all have lots that we have written down in our researches and they've not been the right ones. Can we transcribe them and send them along to FreeBMD? What sort of Batch Header would we give them? Or do we just 'bin them'! None of them, I hasten to add, are from 1837Online. Thanks very much Malise McGuire Yorkscan

I have a newcomer on my team who is finding it impossible to instal WinBMD, for whatever reason. I quote: "I have found the WinBMD programme installed on my C drive. It is 505kb. It says I installed it on 10th August which would be right. But when I click on it, it simply asks me if I want to install it ???? I have tried re-installing it and at the same time disabling the Norton security system as I read in the instructions that some computers need to do this. But it didn't make any difference. Is this any help ---- the "properties" drop down menu on the WinBMD programme says "if you have problems with this programme and it worked correctly on an earlier version of Windows, select the compatability mode that matches that earlier version". Can anybody help this puzzled (would-be) transcriber? Richard Oliver Syndicate Co-ordinator Madrid, Spain r.oliver@arrakis.es
Hi Richard I expect I'm wrong (covering my tracks) but it sounds like he is looking at the installer program. Try suggesting that the would-be transcriber follow the installation instructions and not to guess how to install it. good luck Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Oliver" <richol@arrakis.es> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2005 8:24 PM Subject: Beginner teething troubles > I have a newcomer on my team who is finding it impossible to instal WinBMD, for whatever reason. John, At the bottom of the scan information is the sentence "If the scan does not contain the entry you may be able to find the scan yourself by clicking here." If you follow that route and find the scan (which is maybe the route you took) you can leave feedback of which scan the entry is actually on. In case this was not clear I have updated the explanation on that page. I left such feedback and now the entry for Alice Nixon gives the right scan. Because of the way the system works every other entry on this page will also now point to the right scan. Having said all that when I tried to leave feedback it threw up an error which I have now corrected. So we have a double success, right scan and bug corrected! Hi Barrie and John The births this year came from a microfilm. The Microfilm for this year is special in that the whole film is done as pairs of pages where the right page is not the next page but plus three. Other years of births that are double pages are correct at plus one. The error was made in 1988 (approx) when the registers were microfilmed. Not when they were scanned done much more recently (after 2000). Barrie -- This is the only year with this variation all others are as expected (I was the scanner for scan2 who was responsible for these years) At 05:52 AM 11/08/2005, Archer Barrie wrote: >John, > >At the bottom of the scan information is the sentence "If the scan does not >contain the entry you may be able to find the scan yourself by clicking >here." > >If you follow that route and find the scan (which is maybe the route you >took) you can leave feedback of which scan the entry is actually on. For what it's worth, here are a few lines copied from a file that I uploaded without problem a while ago which had exactly the same type of illegible addition: Bacon,Samuel,St. Geo. East,1c,777 Bacon,*,*,*,* Bacon,Stephen,Sheffield,9c,489 (It's from a Marriages page, so no 'age at death' entry, as there is with the Deaths pages of course.) Hi FreeBMd`ers, I am a new transcriber who has hit a problem! I cannot seem to find the answer in the help/advice files. Right at the bottom of the page I am working on there is a handwritten entry, other than the surname I can read absolutely no part of the entry. I have tried to insert this entry where I believe it belongs, for the fields I cannot read I have tried inserting a question mark, or an asterisk, or an underscore. But when I try to upload the page to the FreeBMD database it gives me an error message saying "error on line 371" (this being the line in question). I do not know what else to try. Thanks Paulette
I am a transcriber but found this problem when doing research. Where do I report it? A search for the birth of Alice Nixon in Barnsley in 1890 gives the following result :- Births Dec 1890 Nixon Alice Barnsley 9c 181 No problem with that, but the spectacles icon points to file :- LDS-211-000-0951141/1890b4-349.tif This does not contain the entry for Alice Nixon because of the way the pages were scanned. LDS-211-000-0951141/1890b4-347.tif contains pages 347 (NEW) & 350 (NIS - NOR) LDS-211-000-0951141/1890b4-349.tif contains pages 349 (NIC-NIS) & 352 (NOR-NUT) LDS-211-000-0951141/1890b4-351.tif contains pages 351 (NOR) & 354 (O'CO - OLD) When asked the following question the answer has to be "Reject" because page 350 does not follow 349. "You can help future researchers by reporting whether a scan does or does not contain the entry by using the buttons below after you have viewed the scan. Use Confirm if the scan does contain the entry and Reject if it does not." I suspect that the problem cannot be fixed without rescanning, but it will result in a lot of rejection reports where the actual data is correct. John Wood (laschapas)

I wonder if you have now managed to download it. I tried by going to "View Images" rather than via the usual list of scans available for transcription. It is a double page scan which I downloaded as a pdf image. As a pdf it is a large image which even on a fast broadband connection took a while to download. If you are using "dial-up" the size of the file may be the problem. The good news is that once you do manage to download it - it's easy to read. We are transcribing 1862 Deaths, June Quarter, and one of my team has pointed out that scanned pages 45, 46, 47 and 48 have areas where only the odd item can be made out, and areas where nothing is readable at all, even to the point where the number of lines is uncertain. How should I advise this transcriber? Extensive use of the * symbol, or a #THEORY entry to cover the lot? Beginner's Help and Knowledge Base FAQs don't really cover this extreme case. I am transcribing the marraiges of 1911 March quarter page 69 and have the following entry. Brooke, (Raja Muda of Sarawak) Charles V., Easthampstead,2c,629 The Raja Muda of Sarawak is a title and I am not sure whether it should come before or after the given name. If I transcribe as seen it would come before the given name but in the same column but I have seen eslewhere in the discussions on this list the suggestion that things like Duke of should come after the given name. Guidance please, IvorC
