    2. Christopher Richards
    3. You have confirmed what I had previously suspected - that when handwritten pages were "typed" the typists made many mistakes. Last time I was at the FRC I enquired if the hand written pages that have been typed still exist - and if they might be accessible. The answer is that they are probably in the store at Christchurch Hants. I was given the email of the person in charge there - but other things intervened and I haven't done anything further about it. 3. I was working on a double page scan, 1886 b1_474, and decided to try out BMD Verify, before I had finished the whole thing. After a lot of confusion I finally got it working (I think in the correct way) and checked a whole column. I then went back to open it up to transcribe the rest, and now I am getting the following message. Invalid Project file. It has lines missing. Then the next message says Please correct the details in the following header screen. when I try to correct it it, it warns me that there is already a file with that name. can anyone advise me please? The file 1886 b1_474 is in my output folder and appears to be alright. The 'duff' files were not consecutive ones, I never knew which ones were going to be and the okay ones downloaded without any difficulty at all. We don't think it has anything whatsoever to do with AOL's Image compression function, as described on the Google page, because we did not and have not disabled ours and the downloads are being downloaded okay. In fact since February this year and the batch of intermittent 'duff' files from the 1856 set I have had no further difficulty in downloads. We think that some of the scanned images, especially in the 1856 set, were not scanned in the same way as the rest. Best wishes Malise

    3. Hi I have someone within my syndicate who has problems downloading scans that have been allocated to them. Most of the time they download a scan, it somehow ends up as either an ART or BMP file. And the few that have stayed in the right format can't be opened anyway. I have already suggested Infranview to them as they have no other graphic related programmes on their computer, but this made no difference. They are using Windows ME. Any suggestions as to the cause of the problem, and how to resolve it. Thanks

I have already suggested Infranview to them as they have no other graphic related programmes on their computer, but this made no difference. They are using Windows ME. Any suggestions as to the cause of the problem, and how to resolve it.> Hi Chris I had exactly this problem earlier this year, in February! In all some 20 scans were 'duff' - ie, couldn't open. In the end, my husband fixed up a check system, because I didn't know they were 'duff' until I tried to use them. This allowed me to see their size as they were downloaded - no size, no image. To get round the lack of image I opened the scan so that it showed on the screen. I clicked on Edit, then Select All, then clicked on Copy. Then click on File and Save As, and put it into Output. At this point the menu will show as File Name [eg 1856M4-0721.jpg] and Save as Type will be showing ART(*.art) Click on Save as Type and find the next row below ART (*.art) in the box which says .bmp; click on this. Then go back to file name and CHANGE the extension by typing from .jpg to .bmp The file will now open. Double check in Output that it does do this. Its longwinded and time consuming but you do get there in the end! I am using Windows XP and have PaintShopPro. which can read a wider range of files than Irfanview, which I also have and it plaintively says it cannot read ART files! We don't know the cause of this problem but we think it was something to do with the way some of the 1856 files were scanned in. On the other hand my syndicate coordinator could read them okay. Hope this helps. Best wishes Malise Yorkscan

    1. HAND WRITTEN SCANS WHICH ARE TYPED IN FRC.
    2. John Mills
    3. I am currently transcribing hand written scans 1846m1-H-0172 through to 1846m1-H-192. As usual with hand written scans I print them out and take them to the FRC and check against the "originals". With the above scans however I find that they have been retyped and compressed into fewer pages. The problem I have is that it is obvious that the typist has "corrected" some of the entries and also made errors in the transcriptions. For Instance Page 175 Hodge Mary Ann Tiverton x 473 has been transcribed as Hodge Nary Ann Page 186 Holloway William Kidderminster xviii 390 is entered twice on hand written scans but only once on typed scan. Furthermore several of the page numbers are different where the scan is quite clear. I intend to do the following and would like confirmation that what I am doing is right. 1. Where I am absolutely satisfied that the hand written scan is correct use that information. 2. Where the hand written scan is unclear but I am absolutely satisfied that the typed version is a correct interpretation use that. 3. Where I am in any way unsure use the normal underscore, brackets, asterisk etc. Would someone up on high please confirm that I am doing the right thing before I upload these files John Mills jmills

    3. People, May I just add a word of warning about transcribing by Column rather than row. If you do transcribe by row, can I please ask that you take particular care, and ensure that you always verify your page afterwards. As the corrections coordinator, I have come across a considerable number of pages where the fields of a particular row has the surname from one entry, the forenames from the row above, district/volume from the row below etc. If anyone does transcribe by Column, then please take particular care, and please ensure that you carefully verify your pages, as a simple mistake can cause MANY incorrect entries. I would always recommend that BMDVerify (Whichever way you transcribe) is used before uploading pages. It is very simple to use and with careful use can eliminate the vast majority of errors. Whichever way you transcribe, Keep up the good work. 3. Jay is correct in his description of the meaning of &c, or etc. I'm doing Dec. 1846 marriages and all the clerks must have been "lazy clerks". It's not only Ashton &c. It's also Lewes, Lexden, Loddon, Tunstead, Winchester, Hereford and others, or, may I say it, &c. Which raises the point, how many transcribers are doing what our instructions say, TWYS - type what you see. The &c is ignored time and time again. Thanks for raising the matter, Kate, so that I may, as it were, get on my soapbox at Hyde Park Corner! If Ashton &c, for example, is an abbreviation by the indexing clerk for Ashton under Lyne, which name came in in full from the registration district in its quarterly return, why are not the registration districts with the &c abbreviation shown in full in the site at FreeBMD where the district is described.
