    3. Hi Brad You may enter the original version out of order or you may enter the corrected order. The corrected order is preferable but either is OK. A comment is not necessary. This advice only covers corrections made on the original indexes. good luck Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brad Rogers" <brad@fineby.me.uk> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 07, 2005 10:06 AM Subject: Names appearing out of order > Hello All, > > I'm transcribing marriages from Dec 1911, and a couple of the people > indexed appear out of alphabetical order. 2. Brad Rogers
    3. Hello All, I'm transcribing marriages from Dec 1911, and a couple of the people indexed appear out of alphabetical order. However, they are both marked with a dot at the left hand side, with a similar mark appear where they should be listed. These are typed entries in the wrong place on the page, not additions at the bottom of the page. The question is, do I transcribe them where they are, and make a note, or where they should be? -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent"

    1. Quality of Scans
    2. Graham Chamberlain
    3. I am currently transcribing 1884 Marriages (.tiff images) and am frustrated at the poor quality of the scans. They all seem to be clear at the top of a page but the quality deteriorates alarmingly as one gets nearer the bottom with many of the page numbers often being wholly or partially illegible. Why are the scans so poor and is there anything that can be done to improve the legibility? best wishes Graham

    3. Many thanks to the many of you who have replied to my query. We've also done a search of the Outlook Express Help files (don't use it ourselves) and finally have a better idea of what's what. 2. Alan Walker
    3. Hi, regarding the problem viewing TIF (TIFF) files I would suggest that one solution would be to download the excellent FREE program IRFANVIEW from www.irfanview.com This should enable you to view the file and to also save it in another format which should be more acceptable to your computer. Irfanview can accommodate files in almost every conceivable format. I hope this is of some help. Alan. --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. 3. Sorry I must be thick or something but unless the files are being sent to you via E Mail, I don't understand the problem, surely if you do have a problem with this, make a note of the files & go to the freeBMD site, locate said files d/load them to your freeBMD folder on your hardrive, where you will then find that you can then open .tif files Thomas Scan2 I transcribe for FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

    1. RE: Problem with .tif files and downloading scans
    2. Sue Smith
    3. There is a problem of compatibility between Outlook and any other email program, including Outlook Express, which could be the reason for the unreadable attachments. If an email is sent from Outlook with an attachment, other email programs often only see a .dat file. Very annoying that MS can't even make their own applications compatible with each other! The solution is for the SENDER of the email, in Outlook, to send their email as Plain text (not Rich Text or HTML formats). Of course, if the email with the attachments wasn't sent from Outlook, then I don't have any suggestions. Plain text can be set against an individual user in the Outlook Contacts record - there is a check box alongside the email address for this purpose. Or is can be set as the default under Tools/Options/Mail Format. 3. Hi Melda, I had the same problem viewing .TIF files on-line. It seems the problem lies with Outlook Express version 6. I don't know what the technicalities are but I got around it by a free download of Alternatiff. A Google search should find it. Once installed, it opens automatically and you hardly know it's there. 3. Hi. The first problem, Outlook Express stripping attachments fom emails, might be: Is it OE saying it has removed access to the following unsafe attachments in you mail: ... list of them ... when you view the message ?. Or they are greyed out when you click the paperclip in the preview pane ?. If so, try - Tools - Options - Security tab - untick the box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved ..." As to the other problem - no idea! 3. Hi I'm looking for a volunteer who could check out 1859 June Births Film (not fiche) at their local Records Office/FHC. It involves checking the sequence of about 20 frames on the film to enable us to resolve a small problem on the numbering of the scans on FreeBMD. If anyone can help, will they please email me off list to enable me to supply details of the 20 frames which require checking. Thanks Allan Raymond FreeBMD Co-ordinator of Syndicates

    1. Problem with +PAGE
    2. Kate Rimmer
    3. I am transcribing 2-column scans of marriages from Jun 1861 (letter M). At the end of the first column I type +PAGE, and Win BMD adds the next page number for me. Then when I "send file to FreeBMD", WinBMD asks if I would like it to add a +PAGE at the end of the file and I choose yes. This has always worked o.k. for me as far as I know, but today when I have done this then tried to "send the file to FreeBMD" I get a message saying "There is an invalid +PAGE at line..." for each of these two added +PAGEs. Looking at it, the one at the end of the file has the same number as the one in the middle so I have to change it to the next number manually and then it seems to be o.k. Looking through all my files on "File Management" I notice that the page number at the top of each file has 4 digits (including a leading zero) while the page numbers in the middle and at the end have 3. I have no idea whether this is connected with my problem or not. Kate Rimmer.
