Dear Sue, That was well said. There was only one thing I would quarrel with you over; you said: " I am no expert", but you are, you have read 1000's and 1000's on entries from a multitude of scribes whose handwriting ranged from poor to good and from photographs that ranger from appalling to fair. And for five years. That makes you an expert. I am confident you could hold your own on reading the writing with anyone. I suspect the problem with some co-ordinators is they just dish the work out and that is all. We and this includes Bob, you and the other mentors have got it more right than anyone else. There can't be a right answer, but one of the ways you can measure our success is to count how many times one of "ours" raises a query on any of the lists. From time to time I have raised the question of putting the FreeBMD "faq's" and "Hints for beginners" in a more user friendly format. The answer is always we can't on site, but after all this time you would have thought they could find a way around the problem. I have been trying to launch a website for the syndicate, and this was going to include all the bits and pieces of pictorial help we have put together over the years. I thought it was ready for uploading and when I tried yesterday it failed. I think I know why, but that will have to wait until the middle of the week before I have a clear patch of peace and quiet to sit and work it through for a two or three hours. You dun well gal!! Please can I ask you all to use sensible subject lines . I have had to recover all the mails relating to the "Unidentified Subject" thread from my spam checkers bin, as it marked them all as spam. OK that may be partly my fault for having an over-zealous spam checker, but usually it is reasonably accurate. Helpful subject lines are also brilliant at allowing readers to pick out the more relevant mails to their research from in my case the on average 100 genealogy mails a day. I do try and read all my mail, but at busy times, resort to reading subject lines only .....re Digest no. XXX or unidentified subject isn't at all helpful, so please people, just take a second to help us all out with clear subject lines Sheelagh
Karen, its sounds as if your download did not complete correctly, so you have an incomplete file, which cannot be expected to load. Go back and download again, would be my advice, checking the download window to see that it completed correctly and didn't just hang. Hope this helps, Keith

An aid regarding handwritten scans can be found via the Transcribers' Page at: http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/vindex.shtml scroll down to Volunteer Support & Resources and click on "How to read 19th Century Handwriting". If after reading this document individuals still can't decipher the hand written information then use the "Uncertain character format" which can be found on our Hints and Help For Beginners at: http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/beginhelp.shtml scroll down to "Uncertain character format". Hello All, Is anyone aware of plans to port BMDVerify to Linux? Other people would, I'm sure, be interested. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent"
hi, i dont know if this is the right place to send this , i am already in brunette syndicate but i recently had a major problem with my pc i never saved my bmd verify and win bmd to disc and i had to do a restore so i lost my settings etc, i have tried to reinstall but i am getting an error message that says could not initialise download expected size 517506 returned 165920 so i cannot start transcribing again until this is resolved. i dont know much about tech side of my pc so any simple info would be great. thanks in anticipation karen green.
I would heartily endorse what Allan says. Don't even think of submitting your transcription without using BMDverify. The most important errors, in my opinion, that it will highlight are those of omission. It is so, so easy to miss a line and if a line hasn't been keyed then no one can find that record in a search. best wishes to all Graham Allan Raymond wrote: >Hi > >It may be useful to give a reminder to our new transcribers and possible others we have the >extremely useful BMDVerify Program developed by David Lang . > >To quote: > >"The BMDVerify program has been written to help you carry out a final check once you have finished >transcribing a scanned BMD index. Hi It may be useful to give a reminder to our new transcribers and possible others we have the extremely useful BMDVerify Program developed by David Lang . To quote: "The BMDVerify program has been written to help you carry out a final check once you have finished transcribing a scanned BMD index. It works by displaying the scanned image of the index from which you did the transcription and in a small window on top, what you have transcribed using SpeedBMD or WinBMD. Each transcribed index record is displayed in turn, just below the entry in the original scanned image so you can quickly compare the two to see that you have transcribed them correctly." Comprehensive information can be found at: http://bmdverify.itendia.co.uk/index.html which includes a link to download BMDVerify. You'll be amazed at the errors identified in transcribed files when using BMDVerify. Allan Raymond FreeBMD Co-ordinator of Syndicates

There is a bug in version 4 WinBMD which will give a warning that a "?" should be the only character in a field when it is either the district name and/or the volume number which is missing but it will accept the entry. However the comma does still have to be there, unlike the example shown below which should read "Suinthorpe,?" (without my quotes). This bug is fixed in version 5.
