    3. I may not be the first person to ask you whether you filled in the first page of BMDVerify correctly, saying that you had a three-column scan. Also if you ever think you have lost a recently-transcribed file, have a look in the WinBMD 'File' menu and see what the folder address is in the 'Define Save Path' entry. It could be that you are saving your file in a different place on your computer from where you expect. 3. From your description it sounds as though you have changed where WinBMD is saving its files. Look on the Files menu and you'll see an item called "Define Save Path" and next to this in brackets you'll see where files are being saved - if this is anything other than where you are opening the files from then this is your problem. Try clicking this menu item and navigating back to the default folder (C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Output\) and see if that helps. If before doing that you look in the folder in brackets you should find your correct file in there and you can move it back to the Output folder. Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: Louise & Tim Atherton To: FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 21, 2005 12:36 AM Subject: saving transcriptions Further to my previous email, I just wanted to ask about the WinBMD program re saving. Yesterday I opened up 1883M3-J0757 to find that only the 1st part of the page was saved, so I went on to finish the following 2 columns, entered +PAGE,0758 at the end, saved batch & exited. When I went to do a Verify today, only the first part was visible again, the other 2 columns had disappeared again! I understand that 1883M3-J0756 had unfortunately been overwritten with info from 0757, but exactly the same thing with 0756, 1st column there, the other 2 not. Also the header on the top left hand corner is incorrect & can't be altered. Any advice on this one please? Thanks Louise ==== FreeBMD-Admins Mailing List ==== Want to help FreeBMD? 3. Thank you to all who replied with help for managing files. I neglected to mention that I hadn't uploaded the file to the BMD website yet, the file is still saved on my computer. I completed transcribing 1883M3-0756, then started -0757, without placing the +PAGE at the end of 0756. After saving each time & finishing, I went to check both files before starting BMDVerify & found that 0756 is a copy of 0757 and one of the files was saved automatically as Pre-0757, yet they are the same & I know that I definitely entered the correct batch, starting with the "A" forenames in 0756. This file seems to have disappeared. Another thing I should mention - my instructions were, because I am new, were to hold off uploading to the BMD website until my first submission had been checked, which is fair enough. Apologies for the confusion. Any help please or do I have to redo 0756? Louise

    3. (changed title from Unidentified subject!) John In a roundabout way I gave you and your team a pat on the back in my earlier response to Sue's offer of help. I also knew that Sue was a member of your team, which jogged my memory about your "How to read 19th Century Handwriting" below. To quote my response: ***** An aid regarding handwritten scans can be found via the Transcribers' Page at: http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/vindex.shtml scroll down to Volunteer Support & Resources and click on "How to read 19th Century Handwriting". ***** "How to read 19th Century Handwriting" is the recognised brain child of your Syndicate. I'm sure the Trustees of FreeBMD will agree with my comments that we will take on board any constructive comments on improvements to our "Hints for beginners" and Transcribers' Knowledge Base to make them more user friendly format. As I don't have sole control of what is on the FreeBMD site any suggestions for improvement can be sent to our DISCUSS list and not direct to me. I seem to recollect Mark Hattam saying the DISCUSS list was quiet, so now is the time to wake it up? I would agree about Sue and your comment "Why aren't the transcribers asking their co-ordinators for guidance?". The first port of call was always meant to be the Co-ordinator rather than post all and sundry to the Admins List Regards Allan Raymond ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Slann" <john.slann@btinternet.com> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 20 November 2005 12:13 Subject: Re: Unidentified subject! Dear Sue, That was well said. There was only one thing I would quarrel with you over; you said: " I am no expert", but you are, you have read 1000's and 1000's on entries from a multitude of scribes whose handwriting ranged from poor to good and from photographs that ranger from appalling to fair. And for five years. That makes you an expert. I am confident you could hold your own on reading the writing with anyone. I suspect the problem with some co-ordinators is they just dish the work out and that is all. We and this includes Bob, you and the other mentors have got it more right than anyone else. There can't be a right answer, but one of the ways you can measure our success is to count how many times one of "ours" raises a query on any of the lists. From time to time I have raised the question of putting the FreeBMD "faq's" and "Hints for beginners" in a more user friendly format. The answer is always we can't on site, but after all this time you would have thought they could find a way around the problem. I have been trying to launch a website for the syndicate, and this was going to include all the bits and pieces of pictorial help we have put together over the years. I thought it was ready for uploading and when I tried yesterday it failed. I think I know why, but that will have to wait until the middle of the week before I have a clear patch of peace and quiet to sit and work it through for a two or three hours. You dun well gal!! 3. Hi Louise It does sound like somehow your file has been overwritten. I have one idea for you to try and see if there is a copy of the file on another part of your computer disc, and another idea to try and stop the same thing happening to other files in future. To try to find if there is another file in a different part of the disc, you can try to use the "Start => Search" menu and look for "All files and folders" where "All or part of the file name" is 0756 and "Look in" is Local Hard Drives. My tip for trying to avoid it in future is to make a copy into another directory (call it something like beforeVerifying). Then use BMDVerify and WinBMD and you did before. That way if something goes wrong and a file gets overwritten you can at least go back to where you were before you started verifying and correcting. But I fear that for this file you will most probably need to retranscribe it. 1. Bouquets Page
    2. Evan Smith
    3. Hello my transcriber friends - It was my e-mail of the 14th re this page which caused many strong opinions to be expressed on this site. Having been away for two days, and the dust having settled, and having made no response to date, I now exercise my right of reply, even though the matter is now almost past history. My original comment was never intended to be sarcastic, caustic, or anything else of that nature. On a second reading, perhaps it could be taken as somewhat curt. Such was not my intention. It is not my nature or intention to cause any ill-feeling among the transcribers and/or the management at any time. However, each of us is an individual and can respond in different ways at different times. I have been in contact with Allan Raymond in this matter, and no animosity exists between us. Having come into contact with computers well after my retirement, I'm afraid I haven't moved beyond the semi-literate stage. Over the last 2 years, I've been in regular contact with Allan seeking assistance and guidance in transcribing, and it has been promptly given, almost invariably within 24 hours. I raised the matter of the Bouquets' Page following a comment from my computer guru friend, also a family history devotee, who happened to look at that page. He thought it unusual that in view of the obvious excellent organization and management of the project that the last update of this page was 2 years ago, when it could be assumed that there would be a continuous flow of "bouquets" coming in. That caused me to wonder who else may have entertained the same thought, as I did - hence my comment. It has been suggested that I or Derek Lowe should offer to take over Allan's job. Does this mean that whenever a transcriber makes a comment or offers a suggestion re an update or a possible improvement then he/she should offer to take over the job of the person responsible for that segment of the FreeBMD project? We would be having a game of musical chairs! In my case, I haven't the computer knowledge to take over any position of responsibility. Does that bar me from making any suggestions? Like Allan, I am indeed a volunteer, and like Allan, I don't get paid either for my contribution to FreeBMD. But, like Allan, I do give the project a good deal of support, but not in administration. Much effort and commitment are involved in doing over 75,000 transcriptions over 2 1/2 years. Allan's comments of Tuesday the 15th put the position in perspective and are much appreciated as what should have been an end to this matter. However, as I said at the outset, I felt obliged to put my position, having to date been a silent observer of the ebb and flow of comment (or should I say brickbats & bouquets!) Please, let us have no more. Comments have been made, I have replied, whether adequately or not I don't know, but should anyone feel I have been the cause of the trouble, to them I apologise. Back to transcribing, and, although a little early, my Compliments of the Season to all. Evan S
