    1. Re: Missing Entry
    2. Hi Stuart I just had a look at that for you. I can see there is another name but its not possible to bring that entry up. I would suggest you contact your syndicate leader and tell them and see what they advise you to do Sorry not to be of more help Julie Hi I am VERY new to transcribing so this might be an easy one to answer. I am transcribing 1877 deaths march p111 FOL-FOR and at the bottom of the first column I can see there is an entry underneath FORD Gertrude Myra J. 0.......Chipping S. 6a 13_ I can see the top of the page number has a 7 in the middle but that is all. I know that the surname must be FORD as this continues in column 2 and the first letter of the foremane must be G or H (as Hannah starts col 2) but cannot READ these. What should I transcribe. Regards Stuart Davies

    3. Hi Karan East Ham was in volume 5a between 1st Jul 1947 and 31 Mar 1965, if that helps you to interpret what you read. BTW, the rule for entering See/50 by a question mark is an old rule which changed a while back. Please refer to file:///C:/FreeBMD/sources/rootsweb-FreeBMD2/html/vol_faq.html#6q Jeff told you that WinBMD won't accept a / character in the district field but will accept it in the page number field. But the FreeBMD software itself *will* accept a / character in the district field. The simplest way to do this is after you have used WinBMD to create the file, save it but do not upload it, and close WinBMD. Then open the file with Notepad (but *not* MSWord) and make the edit to add the / character. Then open WinBMD again, and when you get the pop-up "Would you line to continue using batch 1907B3N0401.BMD?" click the Yes button and then upload it in the usual way. 3. Unless you tell us which scan it is, we can't advise you properly ;-( My guess is E. Ham,5A in the district 'box' and See S/50 in the page number box. East Ham is a district created after 1930 when numbering was different. However, Type What You See is the golden rule. WinBMD won't accept a / character in the district field but will accept it in the page number field. No need to use ? for the volume number, as it is there, 5A. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6q applies. 1. Re: {not a subscriber} Submitting a correction.
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. I suppose the question should be asked? Why is there a need to add a reason why the entry is incorrect. I've copied the last requirement from the "Entry correction" page "When completing the source field, please just tell us, in as few words as possible, where you found the information. Lengthy explanations, or worse still spirited advocacy supporting the correction are unhelpful." Therefore, once you've completed the appropriate correction(s) boxes against the record plus inserted the source reference it should be possible for our Corrections Co-ordinator to validate the correction request. If you would like to have another attempt at submitting the correction request but this time only included details of the source (i.e GRO fiche) your request should be accepted. I get the error message telling me to make sure I've used the tick box and noted the record in question and I still cannot send it. Any ideas? Regards B. Clark

    3. Thanks to everyone who commented on this problem. Sorry I quoted the wrong year (1867) in my query. It is 1851. I had just uploaded a 1867 file to FreeBMD and confused myself with the file reference. Julie was the first to get to me with a suggested solution which had worked for her and which worked for me. Go to The Admin Page on the Scan 2 site and from there to the FreeBMD GUS Database and then navigate to the page you want. The FreeWMD was the result of a senior moment. 3. First apologies to all those in my syndicate etc who are awaiting replies. I did have quite a lot of computer problems but these seem to be fixed again. My main problem is that I started a new job a couple of weeks ago and this has seriously increased my travelling time each day. I don't get home until 7pm and then have to change, walk the dogs, eat, etc and by the time I've done those it's almost time for bed! I am trying to catch up but it's proving very difficult! Sorry. I've noticed this often with files from freeBMD, both from the Transcriber's directories and from the public 'View image' part of the site. The files will always open ok with IrfanView, but not Paintshop Pro which, as you say complains about an invalid Huffman code (which is the method used to compress the image, from memory). However, if you open them in IrfanView and immediately re-save them to disk using the same file name, they will then open fine in PSP! This applies to *all* the available file formats on the public page (except of course PDF), by the way. Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)

I suspect it should be W-0226 that Peter wants, assuming the year and quarter is correct in his original posting. Mind you, the talk of 'jpeg' confuses me somewhat because all the files for that quarter and year on the main site are actually TIF files. Regards John K.Eason (freeBMD@john-eason.co.uk)

    3. Peter, I'm not a member of Scan 2, so I looked for this file on the Transcribers' pages on the main FreeBMD site. It should be here: http://images.freebmd.org.uk/GUS/1867/Marriages/June/DB-06/ However, the highest numbered W page is 1867M2-W-0245.tif Clearly these files are not JPGs, they're TIFs. I downloaded 1867M2-W-0236.tif and found I could open it with WinBMD, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (the default for TIFs on my PC), and Windows Paint. When I tried to open it with PaintShopPro v5.01 (an oldie but a goody !) I got the error message "An invalid Huffman code was encountered" and it refused to open. I also tried to open it with the Gimp which was successful, but gave me the errors "unknown field with tag 32931 (0x80a3) encountered" and "unknown field with tag 32934 (0x80a6) encountered" in the process. I also tried the next file 1867M2-W-0237.tif with identical results. So, as far as I can see, these files are usable but there's something odd about them. I hope that's of some help. Mike PS.
