Anne You can also use Google.mail on Internet Explorer. I have been using Google.mail for about a year and would not use anything else now. Before I started using Google.mail I was plagued with spam but the problem is now non-existent and I do get all my genuine messages. I also have lots of invitations and if anybody is interested I will only be too pleased to help. Email me at jayms2@gmail.com if interested. I use Ntl and have done for many years. Previously I had used AOL, which was good on the surface but awful underneath. I can't say that I've had many problems with Ntl, just occasional ones with the odd PoP3 account not delivering at times, but the emails, Junk and otherwise still come through. Ntl does have a spam filter which can be turned on and off, I keep it turned off and filter from Outlook by using Junk filter to weed out the chaff, but they still get through. I like it that way as I get full control of what comes in and what goes out. So far I must have 40 odd messages that have come through so far, all about Ntl and problems with it. If I don't receive an email, then I don't know that I've missed it. For all I know these 40 odd emails may only be a small percentage of what is being posted. I would not know. But Ntl works fine for me. I still receive emails from friends and other webs that I have responded to and have never had a reported bounced email yet. But then how would I know if they keep bouncing. Keep posting they all make interesting reading. Happy New Year to all Kindest regards Allan -----Original Message----- From: Louise & Tim Atherton [mailto:athertonlt@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Sunday, January 01, 2006 10:28 PM To: FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Problems with NTL Just to add to John's comment, Outlook Express has a provision for blocking a sender in Messages Toolbar, which you have control over. My advice would also be to ditch NTL - sounds like it's not worth the hassle. I'm with Optus which is excellent. You can go to the spam inbox & check if all emails - just in case an allowed email slips through. (Rarely occurs). Also, there are a number of very good ISP's available that are reliable. 'Heard many horror stories about AOL'. Well please hear this. I have no trouble with AOL email and I get no nuisance spam at all, a satisfied AOL user, Jean Webber
I think people are getting confused about the difference between their own spam folder created by programmes such as Norton, and a folder on NTL / AOL. If an email is deposited in the recipients spam folder then it has been received but placed in the wrong folder. Most ISP's filter programmes block the email when received at the server and discard them immediately. As far as I am aware there is no way that these are retrievable. John.
Hi No it doesn't go into the Spam folder.. We had terrible problems over the last couple of years with AOL. They were barring IP or DNS addresses the same way NTL are now. The barred mail doesn't get as far as the SPAM box and maybe the proposed recipient never knows they've lost mail. We also found out that AOL had different SPAM settings in different localities so getting the problem cured in Connecticut didn't cure it in Arizona. Suggestions to dump NTL are not that helpful. We need to find out what list NTL are using to block mail and/or how we can affect/correct that list. cheers Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: <JAP148@aol.com> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 01, 2006 9:32 PM Subject: Re: Problems with NTL > As far as AOL goes, yes they use a spam filter, but all mail they consider > spam goes into a spam folder, whch you can retrieve very easily, once retrieved > aol will no longer put mail from that address into spam folder and send it to > your inbox instead :-) > > Julie > > > ==== FreeBMD-Admins Mailing List ==== > List archives > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/freebmd-admins > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. I think that the problem is that when NTL started their spam-trapping it slowed things down, and incoming emails would time-out before getting through to NTL, and bounce back. This was particularly true of some free ISPs that seemed not to attempt to send a second time if a timeout occurred, but gave up. This paraphrases information obtained when emails from my daughter were bouncing. I know that some mail to me bounces, but have never found any of the missing mail in the spam folder NTL provides. Yahoo groups mail gets through rather irregularly. The only case I know where NTL settings were at fault in failing to deliver my emails was rectified several weeks after I complained. That was to an ISP in Germany. In general, the wording on 'bounces' usually gives clues as to why the bounce has occurred. The more information you can give to an ISP help-desk from a 'bounce' the more likely they are to be able to avoid it recurring - if they want to. This is my understanding of the situation, which may not be wholly correct. Any of my transcribers who has had messages to me bounced - try try again! They usually get through in the end. If not, send a discreet message to this list and I will provide an alternative email address to contact me. Jeff
Dear All, I suggest you ditch NTL and find a more friedlier IP. I've heard many horror stories about NTL and also AOL, both are a pain up the backside as far as monitoring e-mails are concerned. I am an AOL UK user and have been for 10 years or so, think I have only ever lost 1 or 2 mails, its rare mail I want is treated as spam, but if it is, then it goes to my spam folder. maybe aol usa is different, although I have spent a lot of time there and used aol usa with no problems Julie
As far as AOL goes, yes they use a spam filter, but all mail they consider spam goes into a spam folder, whch you can retrieve very easily, once retrieved aol will no longer put mail from that address into spam folder and send it to your inbox instead :-) Julie
