    3. I don't quite see any problem with what you describe. The image of the page you transcribed has to be there as that is what you are verifying your transcription against. The orange box is a copy of your transcription - once you have lined it up, by going on to Steps 3 and 4 you will be able to search for any errors in your transcription. The image of the page will scroll as you progress through your check. Then you will you need to go back to Winbmd to make and save corrections. ----- Original Message ----- From: "selwyn auty" <sabw1@tiscali.co.uk> To: <FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2006 8:15 PM Subject: BMDVerify > Hi there folks > > > > Can someone out there please help me get to grips with this confounded > programme It's driving me around the bend > > > > After I have input steps 1 and 2 of the set up I get a full screen image of > the page (.jpg) that I have been transcribing from > > laying on top of it is the little orange box with the first item I have to > check on my transcription > > > > no matter what I have tried, I cannot reduce the size of this jpg image > > if I try to move it over the .BMD page which is what it ought to be checking > it pushes the .BMD page behind > > if I try to get rid of the .jpg image (which I don't see any reason for its > being there) the little check box goes with it > > > > can someone please give me a step by step idiots guide on how to run the > check prog properly > > > > desperately > > > > Selwyn > > > > Apologies folks if this message is duplicated but I don't think it went out > first time at 2315 > > > > ==== FreeBMD-Admins Mailing List ==== > Want to help FreeBMD? > Go to http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/Signup.html to find out how. > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. 3. After you have completed transcribing the whole page using WinBMD you can use BMDVerify to check you have not made any mistakes. After you have followed the lining up instructions, you can move down each entry using the Return key, checking you have put in the right data. If you run WinBMD as well you can correct any mistakes there and go back to BMD Verify. It will ask you to press R to reload the file. Then you carry on checking. I find it a very useful program. Does this help? 3. Dear Administrators, I feel a bit of a traitor writing this Email, but I fancy that other transcribers are having the same thought. Now that we know what CAN be read on the original index after seeing Ancestry's scans/photographs, it is going to be hard to work from the FreeBMD scans. We shall all know that Ancestry subscribers will be able to read things that are illegible to us. What fools we will all look! AND it will undermine the user's confidence in FreeBMD. May I suggest, most humbly, that the administrators negotiate with Ancestry to use their images. FreeBMD could provide the army of willing volunteers. I'm sure that all of the transcribers would be more than happy with that arrangement. Again I cringe and apologise for this interference, but I feel driven to suggest it. 3. as a fellow transcriber, I can empathise with you - I found transcribing all those baby deaths rather difficult and I hadn't had your experience. Could your co-ordinator not allocate those scans to you? I know our syndicate co-ord has a variety of scans that are available - I am transcribing a mix of births and marriages at the mo. I asked for a rest from deaths a while back. Anyway, you must do what is right for you - but I am sure your contribution has been greatly valued. 3. Jacky, Although this is off-topic for this list here is a copy of a post I sent to the Discuss list today on this same subject. This is only my thought on the subject not an 'official' FreeBMD response. I think that the real question is how were these pages made clearer? If they are the result of scanning the originals at a higher resolution etc then they are possibly useful, however if they are the result of a software process such as de-speckle, etc, as those on other well known sites are, then they are unlikely to be reliable for transcription purposes. These processes use a mathematical process to determine if each pixel is likely to be part of a character or noise etc on the image and remove the latter, as such they have the possibility of making a character appear to be what it isn't. Whether it is better to transcribe an image altered in this way than one which is very difficult to read is another question but that is why we use symbols to represent illegible characters. Once you start dealing with altered images then what was previously illegible may now appear legible but one cannot tell that it is wrong, at least the present method gives a warning that there i! s something here which may not be quite right. I know that FreeBMD are in the process of having some of our poorer quality pages re-scanned and this is a much better solution than using image processing to "improve" them. 3. I am a user of both Ancestry and FreeBMD. Thank you all for your excellent work. Please do not be alarmed about the appearance of GRO indexes on the Ancestry page. Your search facilities are better than theose offered from Ancestry. FreeBMD searches permit the searcher to specify District or a County. This is not the case with Ancestry. FreeBMD results are filtered and only relevant options are given. The Ancestry results only point the searcher to the GRO pages. If you do not know the year (or sometimes the decade) you have to trawl through four page per year. Who wants to do this when a search engine can do it for you. Ancestry is fine for Census data but you beat then hands down for BMD Keep up the good work. A very happy user of FreeBMD

    3. 1 Why do you need to contact a transcriber, is it a specific transcriber? If you are looking for one of our transcribers regarding a query about a record they uploaded to FreeBMD you will not be able to make contact unless he/she has specifically indicated on the FreeBMD site his/her agreement to be contacted. 2. Scottish Records are available, slight catch you have to pay search for them. These are separate from the FreeBMD Project.
