Many thanks to Sue and Steve. Enlarging the font is the answer!! Chris " The details of the transcribed record in the orange box are too far over to the left. There is a huge gap between the District name and the District number. Consequently, if I have the transcribed forename below its original it is impossible to have the transcribed District anyhere near its original."
Hi Carol I had this same problem on my last assignment . I eventually sent it off and then was contacted and told it was actually 2 pages not 2 columns that I was transcribing - so each column is one page. You need to add +page then I think it should be ok. HTH Pamela -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Thanks for the offer, David. I have worked around the problem and am wondering if you still want the transcription copy. If so, can you receive .bmd files or should I save the file in some other format before sending? Hi Chris, You can adjust the font size, by using F to increase the size and Shift-F to decrease the size, You can also adjust the width of the orange box by dragging it in or out - hover the mouse pointer over the right hand edge and when it changes to a double headed arrow, you can drag the box to make it wider or narrower. You can also adjust the magnification of the scan itself, by using the In or Out buttons at the bottom of the scanned page. Using a combination of these, you can usually get a reasonable line up, but some years are better than others - it depends on the layout of the original index. If you go to the overhead menu at the top of the scan image, there is Help>Commands help... This tells you all the different things you can do with the different buttons. By trying these out, you can find what suits you best. Personally, I don't like the box to be orange - mine is grey which is easier on the eyes. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who responded to my plea. By hitting the minus key when the orange box tells me I'm at the end of the records, I get to the top of the second page. So, I am now in the business of transcribing handwritten scans. I do appreciate all the help. What a wonderful group you transcribers are. Carol
Chris, I change the font (press F for bigger, <shift>F for smaller) when I am checking. This can bring the columns to the right place but sometimes then long District names get curtailed. I have been doing Deaths and I check by columns: I line up names, changing font maybe and go through all. Then I line up Age at Death and check all Then District Etc. Hope this helps. nothing, that's just the way it is. I sometimes resize the box so that it starts under the forename - this is particularly good when you are doing a whole page of the same surname, then the other fields are adjusted better - but there is still a misalignment Bronny ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris Hughes To: FreeBMD-Admins-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, January 29, 2006 11:50 AM Subject: BMD Verify: Another Problem The details of the transcribed record in the orange box are too far over to the left. Hi, I use enter and backspace instead of + or - and have never had this problem. Just press 2 at the foot, the backspace or forward space to the next name after column 1. I go one more than the last entry in column 1 so I know which is the first entry in column 2. Hope this helps. D. I'm not sure if this applies to Carol & Karan, but after I replied to Carol, I loaded an 1858 handwritten file to verify and had something similar happen to me. I checked the file and found for some reason I had only transcribed the first page and put the file into the "to be verified folder" I have. This was giving me a "reached end of records" message when trying to set up BMD Verify because there WAS no more records. Carol The problem may be that the scan is two pages woth a +PAGE in between. The older version of BMD Verify does not cope. My work around is to call it a one column scan and reposition the text box to the top of the second column when required. Alternatively go for a newer version of BMD Verify (But this may also cause problems on some systems) Hope this helps Dominic -------------- I am transcribing a beautifully handwritten scan with two columns. Hello Carol, When the orange box is at the top of the second page, read the instructions in the box and use the + or - keys to scroll, usually backwards, through the names till you get to the name at the top of the page, line it up, press enter and you are away. Sorry if this is a duplicate. I subscribe to the list in digest form. That happens with the 2-page handwritten scans. When you hit the minus key you see the last entry in your transcription. Keep hitting the minus key until you see the name at the top of the second page (about 40 times!). If you have both a district and volume missing, then use ?,? in the 'district' box in WinBMD. You will get lots of warnings in WinBMD when you use ? but should persevere and keep on clicking 'OK' and the file should then save properly, and should upload to FreeBMD, though you may again get warnings. Hope this solves it. If not, let the list know what scan you are working on and someone will advise after looking at it.
