    1. Tip of the Day (No. 6) - Alternative Spouse Names in Marriage Records
    2. Allan Raymond
    3. This is the sixth in a series of "Tip of the Day" to help volunteers who are transcribing for the FreeBMD Project. Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. Also any suggested improvement to the wording of this "Tip of the Day" is also encouraged. The Transcribers' Knowledge Base at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u provides the definitive advice for dealing with alternative names in records. I've been carrying out some checks of recent files uploaded by a number of transcribers to see how they dealt with records containing alternative names. In particular, where alternative spouse names are shown against a marriage record the advice in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u in a number of instances was not being followed The correct way to transcribe a marriage record such as Dunn,Charles,Curphey or Bradley,W.Derby,8b,697 using the advice in http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6u is Dunn,Charles,Curphey,W.Derby,8b,697 #COMMENT(2) entry reads Curphey or Bradley for spouse name Dunn,Charles,Bradley,W.Derby,8b,697 Please note, the #COMMENT(2) line is located between the two entries under consideration. I don't know how much work that is for the programming staff. 3. Put it in where the mark is, even if it is not exactly where you would expect. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/vol_faq.html#6g applies. Most marks are clearly between two lines, especially if you look for the centre of an X or star shape. 2. Archer Barrie
    3. This is a candidate for a System Entry (see http://www.freebmd.org.uk/system-processes-help.html). It would be slightly better if #THEORY had been added rather than #COMMENT. What has been added is actually a combination of both, the first part (out of order) is a #COMMENT and the suggested correction is #THEORY. We are more like to pick up #THEORY for a System Entry than #COMMENT. 3. This could be a case for using #Theory, rather than #Comment. For example: #Theory Surname is Gollancz. However, if the entry is clear, there is no reason not to TWYS, as we are transcribing the indices, warts and all, not correcting them. 3. I transcribe mostly the old hand-written scans where for deaths there is no "age at death" and consequently the district name ends up close to the forename while the volume number is beside the page number for all events pre-1880s or so. It would be really useful to be able to have a blank field to bring district name and volume number beside one another as they appear in later volumes.
